Balance Combining elements to create stability in an artwork. • Symmetrical – two halves of a work are identical, one half mirrors the other • Asymmetrical – halves are not identical, takes into account hue, intensity, and shape • Radial – occurs when objects are positioned around a central point
Emphasis Combining elements to stress differences between elements and creates a focal point Franz Marc
Variety Combining elements to create complicated relationships, achieved through diversity and change.
Harmony Combining or repeating similar elements to create unity or wholeness in an artwork.
Gradation Gradual changes in the elements
Proportion Relationship of certain elements to the whole and each other (size and shape)
Rhythm Repeated elements create a visual beat or tempo.
