Balance • The way the elements are arranged to create a feeling of stability in a work
Formal or Symmetrical Balance • The parts of an image are organized so that one side mirrors the other side. • Picture of the Cathedral of Saint-Pierre in Angouleme, France.
Informal or Asymmetrical Balance • When several small items on 1 side are balanced by a large item on the other side • By Color- Small areas of vibrant color can be used to balance larger areas of more neutral colors. • By Value- Value refers to the darkness or lightness of objects.
Informal or Asymmetrical Balance • By shape- Large flat areas without much detail can be balanced by smaller irregularly shaped objects (painting by Degas) • By position- larger elements on one side of the page can be balanced by a smaller element that is positioned by itself at the far end of the other side of the page.
Informal or Asymmetrical Balance • By texture- Smaller areas with interesting textures areas with smoother, untextured looks. • By eye direction- Your eye can be led to a certain point in a picture depending on how the elements are arranged (painting by Seurat)
Variety • The use of differences and change to increase the visual interest of the work
Harmony • This is a pleasing arrangement of the elements or parts of the whole. • All the notes and the pitch seem to work together to create a pleasing order. • The Milkmaid by Johannes Vermeer
Emphasis • The focal point of an image, or when one are or thing stands out most
Proportion • The comparative relationship from one part to another with respect to size, quantity or degree; • scale
Movement • How and where the artists places the elements and what tools and techniques he uses to move the eye from one area to the other • The artist can use other elements to create a trail, a pathway or serve as a bridge from one to the other and this help to create a sense of flow and order to the design.
Rhythm • A regular repetition of elements to produce the look and feel of movement
