Hernando Cortesby: Kevin and Pat Hernando Cortes was born in 1485 in Medellín, Spain. He was a distant cousin of Francisco Pizarro. He was a very mischievous child and always went exploring. He later sailed to Cuba, and became very passionate about voyaging to the New World.
His First Expedition Cortes wanted to be rich with gold and wanted to capture the city of Tenochtitlan (modern day Mexico City). Hernando asked the governor of Cuba, Diego Velasquez, if he could go on a voyage to the New World. He agreed, but at the last minute changed his mind. After being denied, he ignored him and went anyway. Cortes used most of his money and some money from Velasquez. Because of this, they struggled and many men died. In 1519, Cortes and his fleet of 11 ships sailed to Mexico. He landed in the Yucatan peninsula, where the Mayans were located. This is the map of Cortes’ first expedition. Hernando chose this route, becauseit was the best way he thought to capture Tenochtitlan. This was important, because he was the first voyager to travel all across Mexico.
The Effect of Cortes Cortes’ first expedition was very important because he eventually captured Tenochtitlan and was the cause of the fall of the Aztec empire. The Aztecs could’ve ruled for many years after that and if it weren’t for him, Mexico would be a very different country today. Works Cited: Aztec-History. "Hernan Cortez Biography."
