  1. Turkey Hungers for Education While Georgia Starves

  2. Turkey has 94 public and 38 private universities. Georgia has 37 institutions listed by the University System of Georgia.

  3. resilience –n -- a character trait that helps people confront and attempt to overcome problems by producing effective and successful solutions rather than running away from them. The Turkish government measures the academic resilience of their high school students so that advisors may provide students with academic support.

  4. Turkey has adopted a new attitude with a priority towards better training and pay for their teachers. • Georgia has adopted budget cuts that include furlough days and reduced pay for teachers.

  5. Turkey: • Rated #136 among countries with school life expectancy of 12 years. • Student Selection and Placement Center administers exams to determine who will be selected to attend university. • Students not taking or passing exam are sent directly into the labor market. • Georgia: • Rated #43 among countries with school life expectancy of 16 years. • Students take SAT and Compass for college admission • Students not passing are helped with remedial courses to teach the fundamentals of Reading, Math, and English.

Turkey: • Tuition ranges between 700 US dollars to 6,000 – 20,000 US dollars annually. • Students receive loans from the Higher Education Credits and Hostels Institution to pay tuition costs. • 5% receive scholarships for tuition. • Georgia – Bainbridge College: • Tuition is $3,000 annually. • 94% enrolled students receive Hope and Pell grants. • Students also receive student loans and private scholarships.

  7. In Turkey, of 1.8 million graduates, only 4% were allowed entrance to a university in 2009. At Bainbridge College, few are denied admission. Of the students who enrolled Fall 2010: 77% returned for Spring 2011 48% returned for Fall 2011 40% returned for Spring 2012

  9. Turkey is committed toward the education of its people. It recognizes that strong education will bring its country forward to a greater power. Students at Bainbridge College have become complacent about their education and do not have the hunger of Turkish students.
