The next few weeks • New material from Chapters#14 & Ch#10. • There will be NO TEST on Chapter#10 • We will be doing a lot of review in class, this is to help you! • Review in class will be a combination of the Barron’s review book and the Kaplan’s flashcards. • The BEST thing for you to do, is reread your textbook. Make sure you spend time looking at the maps and charts in the book

5. What are the Goals of Globalization? Depends on who you ask: World Economic Forum – an annual meeting held in Davos, Switzerland. Participants typically: - champion free trade - represent large corporations

6. World Social Forum Goal of the World Social Forum: Find alternatives to the decisions being made at the World Economic Forum. Participants are a network of anti-globalizationists.

7. Korean farmers demonstrate- December 2005 WTO Meeting in Hong Kong. • World Trade Organization’s mission is to lower trade barriers and establish ground rules for international trade. • The World Bank, officially known as the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) both make loans to countries that need money for development projects

8. French McDonald's vandalized French McDonald's vandalized Led by Jose Bove's association of small farmers, protesters vandalize a McDonald's restaurant in southern France in August 1999. Bove's trial a year later stimulated comparable protests. The American fast-food chain had come to symbolize the two-sided force of globalization and Americanization.

Foot-and-mouth disease, England Foot-and-mouth disease, England The outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in 2001 raised questions about globalization and strained relations within the European Union. Here a Spanish border official sprays disinfectant on the wheels of a French truck in March 2001, as part of the European effort to keep the disease from spreading.

13. A set of processes that are: increasing interactions deepening relationships heightening interdependence without regard to country borders. A set of outcomes that are: unevenly distributed varying across scales differently manifested throughout the world. What is Globalization?

14. Globalization Geographer Andrew Kirby explains that with globalization, we are living “not so much in a world without boundaries, or in a world without geography – but more literally, in a world, as opposed to a neighborhood or a region.”

15. The Backbone of Globalization is Trade • Every CEO, reader or writer of a weblog or blog, protestor at a world trade meeting is participating in globalization. • When we buy shoes, clothes or food that was produced overseas-we are participating in Globalization. • Globalization occurs at many scales-macro-world wide and micro local with many differing impacts.

Pro-Globalization Argument • The backbone of Globalization is trade. • Economists-Keith Maskus argues-free trade raise the well-being of all countries since they specialize in what they produce most efficiently. • Globalization promotes innovation and greater use of technology. • It has helped to open many closed political systems • It has broadened the horizons of many people world wide.

17. China-Factory to the World • Goods made so cheaply in China it has cornered the market on many products-results-loss of jobs, but lower prices for the US. • Products from China • 85% artificial Christmas trees • 80% toys • 72% shoes • 70% umbrellas • 50% appliances

May 2008 • “China Price” due to a vast labor force that works for a low price-China has cornered the market on many everyday goods. • Almost all of our toys are made in China-(Guangdong Province is the world’s manufacturing mecca) but it would take an average Chinese assembly line worker 6 months to save enough to buy a Thomas the Tank Engine train set. • China is expected to overtake the US as the world’s largest economy by 2020.

Anti-Globalization Argument • Increased the gap between the rich and poor countries as well as the rich and poor within countries. • Rich (core) countries impose their economic and cultural values on the periphery • Increased use of resources-adverse environmental impact • Eroded traditional methods of income and cultures • Increased some intercultural animosities.

22. Local Resistance to globalization-Zapatista commanders sit at the negotiating table in San Andres Larrainzar, Mexico in 1996. The Mayan-based Zapatista leaders have been periodically involved in talks with the Mexican government over cultural and economic rights since NAFTA began in 1994
