Course Objectives • Students will: • Gain a comprehensive knowledge of how the American governmental system and state government works so that they may become more assertive and productive citizens • Develop confidence in their own political beliefs and possess the knowledge and ability to develop and defend political opinions using logic, history and current events
Major Topics of Study • Unit 1 - The Constitution of the United States • History • Components • Unit 2 – The Legislative Branch • Includes Model Congress • Unit 3 - The Executive Branch • Unit 4 – The Judicial Branch • Civil Liberties, Civil Rights and Amendments • Unit 5 – Parties and Politics • Parties, Interest Groups, Media • Campaigning
Thus Far…. • Students have begun Unit 1 – The Constitution of the United States • Your students can: • Explain the historical foundation of the United States • Analyze the weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation and subsequent strengths of the US Constitution • Describe the compromises made to create the current Constitution and the impact they had on our political system • Describe the limitations placed on government
Course Work • 80% of the course grade is based on Unassisted Assessments (Tests and Quizzes) • 20% of the course grade is based on Assessments with Assistance (Homework, Coursework) • Each unit of study is accompanied by a Common Assessment • Each CP Government course will be taking the same tests and quizzes • Each unit of study will also have a Common Interim Assessment (Quiz) • All tests/quizzes are announced in advance
Course Expectations Of Students Of Teacher Participate in class Complete any and all outside assignments Study for CIAs and CAs ASK FOR HELP when it is necessary Provide description of lesson on FIS calendar Provide copies of PowerPoints, notes, and handouts on FIS class files Be available for additional student help Respond to student/parent requests in a timely manner
