Matthew Ch 8-18 • Standard expectancy for the coming Messiah: A great leader, who with his unique God-given power, would lead Israel as God’s instrument to establish God’s Kingdom on earth. (Acts 1:6 “Lord are you going to restore to Israel now?”
Matthew (continued) • The use of the word “Church” in the Gospels. (Mt. 16:18; 18:17). • Chapter 8 begins Book Three of the Gospel: Preaching the Reign of God. • Ch 8-9 depict Jesus as the Messiah of the deed.
There are ten miracles; a parallel to Moses when the ten plagues led to freedom: The leper, Centurion’s servant, Peter’s mother-in-law, Stilling the storm over the lake, Expulsion of demons, a Paralytic, a Dead girl, a Woman with a Hemorrhage, Two blind men, a Possessed mute.
Demonstrates that he has power over sickness, nature, life and death, demons: over all evil resulting from sin. The number “10” indicated completeness.
