  1. FARC 111- INTRODUCTION TO ART AND DESIGN • GENERAL LEARNING OUTCOMES (COMPETENCES) • On successful completion of this course, all students will have developed knowledge and understanding of: • The role of culture in shaping the lives of the people (awareness) • The relationship of art and design (understanding) • The process of perception (awareness) • Various branches of design and their relationships • The principles which govern the visual realm of design • Understanding the common terminology used in different fields of design • Design process and different stages a designer may go through in this process • In this course students develop an appreciation and respect for: • Their own cultures as well as the others’ • Relating design process with cultural and perceptional issues 11/12Fall Lecture 1

  2. Culture The most common choices made by a group of people in a same region. 11/12Fall Lecture 1

  3. Culture A way of life that typifies a group. A system of symbols meanings, cognitive schemata. A set of adaptive strategies for survival, related to ecology and resources. 11/12Fall Lecture 1

  9. Effect of culture in architectural scale

  10. Previous discussions: Culture ART AND DESIGN AS COMPONENTS OF CULTURE Key words: Art and Design 11/12Fall Lecture 1

  11. ART DEFINITION OF ART: Art is the conscious use of skill, craft and creative imagination in production of what is beautiful, appealing and more than ordinary significance. Key words: Art and Design 11/12Fall Lecture 1

  12. Different kinds of visual art: Painting Sculpture Video art Cinema, etc. Key words: Art and Design 11/12Fall Lecture 1

  13. FOLKLORE – BALLET Key words: Art and Design 11/12Fall Lecture 1

  14. ART - PAINTING Key words: Art and Design 11/12Fall Lecture 1

  15. ART-SCULPTURE Key words: Art and Design 11/12Fall Lecture 1

  16. MOBILE SCULPTURES Key words: Art and Design 11/12Fall Lecture 2

  17. MUSIC Key words: Art and Design 11/12Fall Lecture 1

  18. DESIGN Design is the application of creativity to planning the optimum solution of a given problem, and the communication of that plan to others Key words: Art and Design 11/12Fall Lecture 1

  19. Modes of design: Urban Design Interior Design Graphic Design Landscape Design City planning Industrial Design Architecture Fashion Design Key words: Art and Design 11/12Fall Lecture 2

  20. Key words: Art and Design 11/12Fall Lecture 1

  21. INTERIOR DESIGN Key words: Art and Design 11/12Fall Lecture 1

  22. INDUSTRIAL DESIGN Key words: Art and Design 11/12Fall Lecture 1

  23. INDUSTRIAL DESIGN

  24. INDUSTRIAL DESIGN

  25. WHAT ARE DESIGNELEMENTS? Key words: Design Elements In general DESIGN ELEMENTSare VISUAL COMPONENTS used in creating a composition or a design organization ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN ELEMENTS are MORE than just VISUAL components: In addition, they have functional, structural, spatial and other roles. 11/12Fall Lecture 1

  26. General table for elements of design and art Key words: Design Elements 11/12Fall Lecture 2

  27. design elements and their Characteristics (for formal aesthetics- basic design) Point: Value/ tone Color Line: Value/Tone Color Texture Dimension (Size) Length Direction Key words: Design Elements 11/12Fall Lecture 1

  28. Characteristics of Design Elements: Plane: Value/ Tone Color Texture Dimension Length Width Shape Direction Proportion Key words: Design Elements 11/12Fall Lecture 1

  29. Characteristics of Design Elements: Volume: Form Value/ Tone Color Texture Dimension Length Width Depth Shape direction Proportion Key words: Design Elements 11/12Fall Lecture 1

  30. POINTELEMENT IN ARCHITECTURE A point has NO dimension conceptually. A point element in architecture is the projection of an element like a column vertically on a ground plane : on the PLAN. X Key words: Design Elements 11/12Fall Lecture 1

  31. Example to: POINTELEMENTS INARCHITECTURE Projection of a point with a vertical linear elements

  32. LINEELEMENT IN ARCHITECTURE Key words: Design Elements A point extended in any direction will constitute a line. Linear elements in architecture can be vertical, horizontal or diagonal: Examples: Columns, obelisks, towers or Beams, bridges, pergolas etc.. 11/12Fall Lecture 1

  33. Example to: LINEARELEMENTS IN ARCHITECTURE Key words: Design Elements 11/12Fall Lecture 1

  34. PLANEELEMENT IN ARCHITECTURE Key words: Design Elements A line extended in a direction other than its own, becomes a plane. Aplane serves to define the boundaries of a volume. So, in the vocabulary of architecture it is a KEY element. Examples are: Floor and roof slabs, window panes, walls etc. 11/12Fall Lecture 1

  35. Example to: PLANARELEMENTS IN ARCHITECTURE Key words: Design Elements 11/12Fall Lecture 1

  36. Example to: PLANARELEMENTS IN ARCHITECTURE Key words: Design Elements 11/12Fall Lecture 1
