According to the IUCN Organisms can fall into 7 Different Categories • 1- Least concern (LC) • 2- Near Threatened (NT) • 3- Vulnerable (VU) • 4- Endangered (EN) • 5- Critically Endangered (CR) • 6-Extinction in Wild (EW) • 7- Extinct (EX) THREATENED ORGANISMS
Threatened Species • Vulnerable (VU) • a species considered to be facing a high risk of extinction in the wild. • Endangered (EN) • a species considered to be facing a very high risk of extinction in the wild • Critically Endangered (CR) • a species facing an extremely high risk of extinction in the wild
What has been done to help this issue? • Endangered Species Preservation Act, passed in 1966 • Endangered Species Conservation Act, replaced the above legislation in 1969 to strengthen the it. • Endangered Species Act, passed in 1973 • The responsibility for the management of endangered species in terrestrial habitats falls on the Fish and Wildlife Service of the Department of the Interior.
Learn as much as you can about endangered species • Visit a nearby national wildlife refuge or nature center • Volunteer to help • Don’t buy species illegally taken from the wild • Don’t buy products made from threatened or endangered species.
