What is a Goal? • Dictionary definition is “a desired purpose or direction”
GOALS ARE NOT WISHES!

Characteristics of a Goal Clear and concise Measurable Believable and possible Realistic and flexible Have deadlines!
In other words … Think SMART • Specific • Measurable • Achievable • Realistic • Time-defined
Long Term or Short Term? • Long term goals are your overall objective –they may take a month, several months, a year, or carry out over your lifetime • Short term goals are the stepping stones for reaching the long-term goal
TYPES OF GOALS • Personal (your character, personality, physical appearance and conduct) • Family (not just the family you have, but the family you hope to have) • School/Career • Financial • Lifestyle (where and how you want to live)
Write down your goals • Make a list of all the goals you would like to accomplish • Include goals from each category
How to determine a goal What are your priorities and values? Who are your role models or mentors? What are your talents/abilities? What are your likes/dislikes?
Priorities and Values • List five things (traits or characteristics) that are important to you • Rank these things from the least important to the most important
Role Models/Mentors • Think about the people that you admire as well as the people you might envy. • Identify why is this person on your list.
Talents/Abilities • List activities that boost your mood. • If someone compliments you, listen. • Create a collage (pictures and words, etc) of things you find exciting or interesting. Look for themes.
Likes/Dislikes • Make a list, especially in terms of work-related tasks. • What do you really enjoy doing? • What not? • Realize that every job has parts of both.
Identifying and Ranking Goals • List 5 things that you would like to achieve • Rank those 5 things from least to most. • You have just identified and ranked potential goals
IF YOU WERE THE AUTHOR … Imagine your life is a play or a novel. How do you want the “plot” to move forward? What do you want to change?
Working Toward Your Goal Remember stepping stones Create a schedule or plan composed of daily to-do lists, weekly calendars, monthly/quarterly plans
Overcoming Barriers Learn to COPE with problems that stop you from reaching your goals C=Challenge (identify the problem, its causes, and results) O=Option (select the best option from your possible solutions P=Plan (make a plan to act on your option and either decide to adjust your goal or replace it) E=Evaluation (check for progress and revise your plan if needed)
Here and Now • Go back to your goals • What is ONE thing you can do TODAY toward that goal? • Next week? Next Month? • Just DO it!
