  1. Setting Goals

  2. Learning Targets • Explain the difference between short-, medium-, and long-term goals. • Understand the different components of setting S.M.A.R.T goals. • Set a course-related, short-term S.M.A.R.T. goal.

  3. Length of Time • Short-Term: • Goals that can be achieved in a few days or weeks. • Medium-Term: • Goals that take about a few weeks up to a year to achieve. • Long-Term: • Goals that take longer than one year to achieve.

  4. S.M.A.R.T. Goals • S = Specific • M = Measurable • A = Attainable • R = Realistic • T = Timely

  5. Specific • Specific goals are stated with great detail. • Specific Goals Always Include: • How you will measure your progress. • How you plan to attain your goal. • Why this goal is realistic for you. • What time limit will you give yourself to achieve this goal.

  6. Measurable • How will you measure your progress toward achieving your goal? • Ways to measure your progress: • Checklists • Control Sheets • Journaling • Set Smaller Goals

  7. Attainable • How do you plan to achieve your goal? • Create a plan on how you plan to achieve your goal. • State your plan in detail. • Make sure that your plan is realistic for you.

  8. Realistic • Why is this goal realistic for you? • State why this goal is a reality for you to achieve. • Remember… • Trying to reach a goal about something you may have never attempted, increases your risk of failure. • Instead, try to set smaller goals to help you reach that ultimate goal if it is something you’ve never tried before.

  9. Timely • What time limit are you going to give yourself to achieve your goal by? • Determine which length of time (short-, medium- or long-term) you want to give yourself to achieve your goal. • Give yourself a specific date to achieve your goal by and STICK TO IT!!! • Providing yourself with a time limit will keep you motivated to stay on track.

  10. Your Assignment • Write a medium-term, S.M.A.R.T. goal for this course use the rubric provided • State your goal specifically (see slide #5 of this power point for how to write your goal specifically). • You may choose to have your teacher look at your goal before you write your final copy for feedback. • Write your final goal on the paper provided and submit for grading.
