  1. Esophageal Strictures William Sanford Karissa Thoma Dan Frost Allie Finney Client: Dr. Mark Reichelderfer Advisor: Dr. Willis Tompkins

  2. Overview • Background • Problem Statement • Design Constraints • Previous design work • Lab Jacks • Pressure Sensor Sealants • Future Work

  3. Esophageal Strictures • Dysphagia= dyswith difficulty +phagiawith eating • Causes • GERD majority • 25% other problems • Eosinophilic esophagitis UW-Hospital, Dr. Mark Reichelderfer

  4. Eosinophilic Esophagitis • Adolescents and young men • History of food and environmental allergies • Difficult to treat: • Associated with mucosal tearing and perforation http://www.nature.com/gimo/contents/pt1/images/gimo49-f4.jpg

  5. Dilation • Balloon • Dilates radially increasing lumen • TTS scope (through the scope) • Perforations Dependent on: • Clinician’s experience • Equipment http://www.dkimages.com/discover/previews/881/28882.JPG http://homepages.cae.wisc.edu/~bme402/esophageal_structures_s06/images/balloondialation.bmp

  6. Problem Statement • Measure pressure in balloon • Graph volume/pressure curve in real time • Obtain test data on tissue compliance • Be aesthetically pleasing for hospital setting • Eventually be commercially available

  7. Design Constraints • Work with current dilation procedure • Provide real time data • Safety • Equip laptop for hospital use • Provide warning of esophageal perforation • Compact enough for hospital setting

  8. Previous Work • Syringe is filled with saline • Pressure measured with disposable pressure transducer • Volume measured with linear potentiometer • Outputs are connected to computer • Designed LabVIEW circuit for real time graph Seashore, K. et. al. (2006). Device for Dilating Esophageal Strictures.

  9. LabVIEW Circuit

  10. Lab Jacks-LabJack U12 • Pros • Built-in power supply • Large input range • LabVIEW compatible • USB-based • Cons • Cost • No -5V supply http://www.labjack.com/labjack_u12.php?prodId=27

  11. PMD-1208LS • Pros • USB • Power supply • LabVIEW compatible • Cons • No -5V supply • Poor user interface http://www-zeuthen.desy.de/apewww/APE/hardware/APEmille/Temperature/PMD-1208LS.pdf

  12. LabJack UE9 Pro • Pros • Wireless transmission • USB • LabVIEW compatible • Cons • Cost • Bulky http://www.labjack.com/labjack_ue9.php?prodId=46

  13. LabJack Matrix

  14. Metal adhesives - MK 1325 • Pros • High strength • Thread sealant • Low viscosity • Cons • Irreversible • From Germany http://www.bestklebstoffe.com/media/datenblaetter/englisch/tiMK1325ERev001.pdf?PHPSESSID=952e86e08d406e9e05a6b976cf39c2e4

  15. Gorilla Glue • Pros • Waterproof • Good for dissimilar surfaces • Thread sealant • Easy to obtain • Cons • Glue expansion http://www.gorillaglue.com/home/gorilla-glue/product-detail.aspx

  16. Megaloc • Pros • 12000 Psi strength • Thread sealant • Non-toxic • Inexpensive • Cons http://www.herchem.com/specs/megaloc.pdf

  17. Sealant Matrix 2

  18. Future Work • Fix pressure sensor • Obtain 10 atm seal • Configure device with Lab Jack • Configure to hospital laptop • IRB approval/testing
