WHAT IS CORONAVIRUS? Corona viruses are a large family of viruses that are known to cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS)
WHAT IS COVID-19? COVID-19 is the infectious disease caused by the most recently discovered corona virus. This new virus and disease were unknown before the outbreak began in Wuhan, China, in December 2019. COVID-19 is now a pandemic affecting many countries globally.
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF COVID-19? COVID-19 affects different people in different ways. Most infected people will develop mild to moderate symptoms. COMMON SYMPTOMS: Fever Tiredness Dry Cough SOME PEOPLE MAY EXPERIENCE: Aches and Pain Nasal Congestion Runny nose Sore Throat Diarrhea Loss of smell Loss of taste Severe vomiting On average it takes 5–6 days from when someone is infected with the virus for symptoms to show, however it can take up to 14 days. Some people may experience worsened symptoms, such as worsened shortness of breath and pneumonia, about a week after symptoms start.
WHAT CAN I DO TO PROTECT MYSELF FROM CORONA VIRUS? The virus appears to spread easily among people, and more continues to be discovered over time about how it spreads. You can take these simple steps in your daily life to protect yourself from corona virus. WHO and CDC recommend following these precautions for avoiding COVID-19: Avoid large events and mass gatherings Avoid close contact (within about 6 feet, or 2 meters) with anyone who is sick or has symptoms. Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.
CONTINUATION: Cover your face with a cloth face covering in public spaces, such as the grocery store, where it's difficult to avoid close contact with others, especially if you're in an area with ongoing community spread. Only use nonmedical cloth masks — surgical masks and N95 respirators should be reserved for health care providers. Cover your mouth and nose with your elbow or a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw away the used tissue. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Avoid sharing dishes, glasses, bedding and other household items if you're sick. Clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces daily. Stay home from work, school and public areas if you're sick, unless you're going to get medical care. Avoid taking public transportation if you're sick.
IS THERE A TREATMENT FOR A NOVEL CORONAVIRUS? When a disease is new, there is no vaccine until one is developed. It can take a number of months or years for a new vaccine to be developed. There is no specific treatment for disease caused by a novel corona virus. However, many of the symptoms can be treated and therefore treatment based on the patient’s clinical condition. Moreover, supportive care for infected persons can be highly effective.
