  2. Overview of Common Misconceptions • MSG vs EXC vs Blanks • Letter vs Numeric Grade Entries • Total Points Logic • GOALS: • Accurate and valid information that reflects students’ abilities • Quality data to align interventions

Every Box Needs Something!!! • MSG: Indicates that the assignment has not been received, this is calculated as a 0. • EXC: Indicates that the assignment is excused and removes this assignment from the grade calculation • Blanks: This assignment is removed from the grade calculation, but artificially inflates the grade.

  4. Ideal Example: No Blanks

  5. Problematic Example: Many Blanks ? What happens to the grades at the left if and when some of these boxes are changed to 0 or missing at the end of the term?

  6. Usage at DVCA MSG= The student has not turned in the assignment when it was due, but has the opportunity to make up the assignment. ZERO (0)= The student has no chance to make up the assignment, therefore has earned a ZERO. EXC= The student does not have to complete the assignment.

  10. What is Total Points Logic? Please calculate the grade you think the student should receive. Assume these are the only assignments in her gradebook. • Assignment 1: 3/5 • Assignment 2: 45/50 • Assignment 3: 43/45 • What is her grade???

  11. 91% or 82%??????

  12. It depends… Total Points Logic: No (Default) Grade is calculated as an AVERAGE. She would receive an 82%!!!! Here’s How: (each assignment has equal weight) Assignment 1: 3/5 or 60% x 1/3 of grade= 20 % Assignment 2: 45/50 or 90% x 1/3 of grade= 30 % Assignment 3: 43/45 or 95.5% x 1/3 of grade= 32 % Total Grade Received 82/100

  13. It depends Total Points Logic: YES (Default) Grade is calculated as a PERCENTAGE. She would receive a 91%!!!! Here’s How: (each assignment has relative weight) Assignment 1: Points Received/Points Possible 3 out of 5 Assignment 2: Points Received/Points Possible 45 out of 50 Assignment 3: Points Received/Points Possible 43 out of 45 Grade: Points Received/Points Possible: 91 out 100 or 91% What if it wasn’t the difference between an A and B, but rather a D and an F?

  15. WARNING • Caution! The Total Points Logic setting is designed to be set from the beginning and not changed. If changed “midstream,” you must clear out all previously entered grades, hit update, then re-enter the grades for any assignments and hit update.
