CDAC SUBCOMMITTEES: Committee of the Whole Key questions 1. What is a “sustainable community”? We know the ingredients: social, economic/financial and environmental elements • How do the elements work together? • At what scale? 2. How do we attain a sustainable community? • Possible steps (from retreat) • start with revitalization (building a foundation for the community) • stability is important • capacity building is important • working with stakeholders is critical CDAC 2009-2010

What is a “sustainable community”? • Sustainable development pattern = walkable, transit-oriented, mixed income and mixed use community Why? • maximize choices for residents and businesses • lower transportation costs (now a greater part of many family budgets than housing costs) • create energy savings (by reducing Vehicle Miles Traveled) • enhance access to employment and educational opportunities CDAC 2009-2010
