The motion Woking Parish Share Motion – Passed on Tues 22 October 2013 “This Deanery Synod • Welcomes the recognition by the Bishop’s Council of the need for a strategy for growth in Guildford Diocese, and the work already done in this area; • Notes the local investment by parishes in this deanery in order to achieve and sustain growth in line with the Diocesan Common Purpose; c) Expresses its concern that growing parishes are asked for increasing levels of parish share which do not take account of their need to invest locally for further growth; • Calls on the Diocesan Synod to ask the Bishop’s Council to work with the new Bishop to ensure the parish share system is in line with the Diocesan Common Purpose and promotes rather than penalises growth.” • Motivation is growth

  17. Regular comments • The system penalises small parishes with high PS / member – the range is £300-£1,000 • But after taking into account the other people large parishes employ – it evens out

Regular comments • The system penalises growing parishes who can’t afford to employ the necessary people • But large parishes tend to have more staff per member than small parishes • Sample of larger and small parishes • One staff member per 54 for large parish • One staff member per 76 for small parish

  36. Reasons why it doesn’t aid growth Growing churches need more resources to sustain growth BUT Growth leads to disproportionate increase in share especially with background of decline.

  43. The issue is growth! Conclusion • “Collection rates are high, finances are good”BUT we are declining! • Growth is paramount • Motion asks for a specific review i.e. “Does the share promote growth?” • Diocesan objectives focus on diocese, need to think ‘parishes’ • Effort & time – Yes!
