A little about me….. • This will be my 21st full year as a classroom teacher. • Master’s Degree in Education -1998 • Rdg.Specialist’s certificate - 2000 • Live in Hatboro with husband, • 16-year-old daughter, 12-year-old son
Tonight we will discuss: • Homework Guidelines • Behavior System /Incentives • First Grade Schedule • First Grade Curriculum • Lunch, Mascot, Dismissal • Volunteers, Conferences
Homework • Should take no longer than 15-30 minutes. • Reading/Spelling skills, sight words, Math Home Link pages • Math calendar – 10 minutes or less / 15 days per month for reward • Show and Tell • Homework folders - carry school news/please empty • Read for 15 minutes every night (choice). • Please go over the homework with your child each night and have them correct any mistakes.
Homework Incentive Starting in October, your child will have the opportunity to earn a homework pass. At the end of each month, those students who have completed all homework assignments for the month will be awarded a homework pass to be used at their leisure.
Classroom Rules • Mirror guidance program which models use of social smarts • “expected”/”unexpected” behavior
In all CLASSROOMS, a Billet Beaver… Respects all adults and students Follows directions Raises their hand before speaking Listens Takes care of their supplies and materials Keeps all areas clean Cooperates and works well with others Makes eye contact when speaking Works hard and is ready to learn
Classroom Behavior • Blue – commendable behavior • Green – positive behavior • Yellow – warning for inappropriate behavior • Red – continued inappropriate behavior • Color changes are recorded on calendars sent home each day in homework folder • Movement possible during the day.
Effort Slips • Earned individually. • Display of manners, extra effort, completing quality work, assisting a classmate/staff member • Slips kept in school. • Students will have the opportunity to trade in their effort slips for rewards/prizes. Marble Jar • Earned as a class. • When the marble jar is full, the class will earn a reward such as: extra recess, homework passes, special free time…
First Grade Schedule • 8:50-9:00 Attendance, Lunch count, Morning work, Announcements, Calendar • 9:00-10:15 Math • 10:15-10:35 Working With Words/Shared – (working snack) • 10:35-11:30 Guided Reading/Centers • 11:30-12:00 Writing • 12:00-12:45 Lunch/Recess • 12:45-1:15 Social Studies/Science/Shared Reading • 1:15-2:15 W.I.N. • 2:15-3:00 Special • 3:00-3:15 Pack-up/Afternoon Jobs • 3:15 Dismissal
Snack • Dry and healthy • Eaten in ten minutes or less while working • No drinks except water, please. • Goldfish, crackers, cheese stick, pretzels, cereal, veggie sticks, granola bar
W.I.N. “What I Need” • Periodic meetings to direct the focus for each child • May be used for remediation OR enrichment, depending on the child • Title 1 Reading support will be provided during this time. • Reading Specialist support will be given during this time. • Assessments in September (and throughout the year) will drive decisions.
Math Home Link Book • Home link book will be sent home tonight for you to keep AT HOME. • Homework assignments will be on the classroom calendar sent home weekly. • It is important for you to wait until the assigned night to complete the homework. • Tear the page out of the book and send it to school the following morning.
First In Math • www.firstinmath.com • User name/password matches existing school codes for computer log-on and cafeteria • Password – sent home on small card • Please encourage use of the program, especially on nights when homework is completed quickly.

Show and Tell • Must be completed to receive the monthly homework pass • Theme – check weekly calendar • Benefits – speaking and listening skills
Coming Soon!! Grant recipient – HHEA i-pads will allow the opportunity for more differentiated instruction during center time and W.I.N. time.
Class Mascot – Tom the Turtle • Every Friday, a child will take Tom home for the weekend! • The student will come back to school on Monday and share with the class what he/she did with Tom. The goal is for students to be able to write a few sentences on their own about their experiences, and be able to speak in front of their peers, with ease. • Pictures are optional
Lunch Accounts • Please send money in an envelope or bag LABELED with child’s name and “Mrs. Stoddart.” • You can also put money into your child’s account using www.myschoolbucks.com. This avoids delays and confusion. • Students should have learned their lunch codes, and they will be paying for lunch in the cafeteria on their own.
Dismissal • Changes in dismissal procedures should be written and sent in advance. • Phone calls/emails on the day of the change could be missed. Look for confirmation that the message was received.
Pictures • Please make a note on the information card if you prefer no pictures of your child in the hallway or on my website. • No names are listed with pictures on website.
Other Important Items: • Book orders – occasionally sent (online orders encouraged!) • Wednesday pretzels $.50 • Brown Test Envelopes – sign/return • 5-day special schedule – (see calendar library and technology rotate on D days) • Birthday snacks – small, nut-free • Building is perfume/cologne free.
