  1. The Cal State University English Placement Test (EPT) & Entry Level Mathematics Exam (ELM)

What are the tests for? • The Cal State University (CSU) requires you to take the English Placement and the Entry Level Mathematics (ELM) exam prior to enrollment unless you are exempt by your SAT, ACT, AP, or CSU’s Early Assessment Program (EAP). • The EPT and the ELM are not admission tests; they determine eligibility to enroll in specific courses. • If you don’t take the EPT and the ELM, you will not be allowed to register for General Education classes at CSU.

  3. English Placement Test (EPT) • Designed to assess the level of reading and writing skills of entering undergraduate students. Students who do not demonstrate college-level skills will have to take other classes or programs. • The EPT is not a condition for admission to the CSU, but it is a condition for enrollment. • Students may take the EPT only once.

  4. Are you exempt from taking the EPT? • A score of “Ready for CSU” on the CSU Early Assessment Program (EAP) taken along with the English Language Arts California Standards Test (CST) in grade 11. • A score of “Ready for CSU-conditional” on the CSU EAP taken in grade 11, and completion of the Expository Reading and Writing Course (ERWC), AP English, IB English or an English course approved by the UC “a-g” Doorways course list. • A score of 500 or above on the critical reading section of the SAT Reasoning Test.

  5. Are you exempt from taking the EPT? • A score of 22 or above on the American College Testing (ACT) English Test. • A score of 3 or above on either the Language and Composition or Composition and Literature examination of the College Board Scholastic Advanced Placement Program. • Completion and transfer to CSU of the credits from a college course that satisfies the CSU General Education requirement in English Composition with a grade of C or better.

  6. Entry Level Mathematics Test • Designed to assess the skill level of entering CSU students in math. Students who do not demonstrate college-level skills will have to take other classes or programs. • The ELM is not a condition for admission to the CSU, but it is a condition for enrollment. • Students may take the ELM more than once only on specific dates.

  7. Are you exempt from taking the ELM? • A score of “Ready for CSU” on the CSU Early Assessment Program (EAP) taken along with the CST in Summative High School Math or Algebra 2 in 11th grade. • A score of “Ready for CSU-conditional” on the CSU EAP taken in grade 11, along with the CST in High School Math or Algebra 2. • A score of 550 or above on the mathematics section of the SAT Reasoning Test.

  8. Are you exempt from taking the ELM? • A score of 23 or above on the American College Testing (ACT) Mathematics Test. • A score of 3 or above on Calculus AB or Calculus BC, or Statistics examination of the College Board Scholastic Advanced Placement Program. • Completion and transfer to CSU of the credits from a college course that satisfies the requirement in Quantitative Reasoning with a grade of C or better.

  9. Fees & Length of Tests • ELM $18 • EPT $18 • Allow 2 hours for each exam. If you are taking both exams, allow for 4 hours.

  10. Registration • www.ets.org/csu • You do not have to register in the CSU campus you are attending, you can choose another campus to test at.
