ELA News: See the newsletter • A complete list of module updates is available at the following link:http://www.engageny.org/resource/curriculum-module-updates • Highlights include: • Materials for pre-kindergarten include listening and learning domain materials. The Teacher Guide for Classic Tales contains the information needed to teach the ten stories included in the domain, over the course of the school year. Unlike most domains in CKLA Preschool, the lessons for Classic Tales are not presented consecutively, but are interspersed throughout the school year. Each of the ten tales requires two days of instruction. The first day requires approximately twenty-five minutes of instruction, conducted by the teacher in either a whole-group setting or during learning center time. The second day of instruction for each tale requires between thirty-five and forty-five minutes of instruction, conducted in whole-group and small-group settings, as well as during learning center time. http://www.engageny.org/resource/prekindergarten-ela-classic-tales-domain • K,1, 2 now have more listening and learning domains. Kindergarten and grade 1 are complete and grade 2 is only missing Domain 9. The next Skills Strand Units are complete for kindergarten and grade 1 and 2 now have units 1 - 4. • Grades 3, 4, 5 have modules 1, 2A, 3A and 4. Module 1 has a new, more professional look. All documents are available in PDF. You can print combined documents or select documents (overview, table of contents, assessments, performance tasks, recommended texts). • Grade 6 has significant updates to Unit 2 of Module 1. Unit 2 has been revised to replace myths from “D’Aulaires Book of Greek Myths” with myths from the public domain. Schools that do not have class sets of “D’Aulaires” are advised to reprint Unit 2 in its entirety. The purpose and structure of Unit 2 remain the same in both the original and updated versions. • Grade 6, 7 and 8 - All short informational texts are now included as supporting materials in the lessons. Usability, particularly related to supporting materials, has been improved. Supporting materials for each lesson are named consistently and included in the order used in the lesson. Additionally, the quantity needed/purpose for each supporting material has been clarified (e.g. “one per student” or “one to display” or “for teacher reference”). • Grade 9 has module 1! In this module, students will read, discuss, and analyze contemporary and classic texts, focusing on how complex characters develop through interactions with one another and how authors structure text to accomplish that development. There will be a strong emphasis on reading closely and responding to text dependent questions, annotating text, and developing academic vocabulary in context. http://www.engageny.org/resource/grade-9-ela-module-1 • Grade 10, 11 and 12 do not have new materials at this time. They each have units available to support Close Reading, Evidence Based Claims and Researching to Deepen Understanding.
