  1. Writing Workshop Monday May 18th 2009 Hathersage St. Michael's C of E School

What is the purpose of tonight 's event? • To give parents an insight into writing at our school. • To demonstrate how we deliver the teaching of writing. • To show how we improve the children's learning and writing skills. • To give you an opportunity to look at some of the resources that we use. • To discuss how you might help your child at home. • To have the opportunity to talk to staff.

  3. What are we required to teach? • A range of texts - narrative, non-fiction and poetry – • Narrative – Stories with familiar settings. Dialogue and plays. Myths, legends, fables and traditional tales. Adventure and mystery. Authors and letters. • Non-fiction – Reports. Instructions. Information Texts. • Poetry – Performance poetry. Shape poetry and Calligrams. Language Play. In all cases giving examples of good texts to read and understand e.g. through Reading Comprehension and Guided Reading

  4. How do we deliver it? • What kind of learner are you? • Over to staff to give examples of units of work

  5. Improving writing? • Where do we come from? • What are we aiming for?

  6. How do we improve writing? • Early writing skills - tracing letters, writing in sand • Using role play and drama • Speaking and listening activities and hot seating • Group discussion and interaction • How to structure stories or texts • Word recognition, structure and spelling • Use interesting vocabulary ( WOW words) • Sentence structure and punctuation • Work on handwriting- presentation

  8. Writing across the curriculum • This is an area that we are working together to develop. As our curriculum becomes more creative children will have the opportunity to do this. • Some examples of the way we have started to do this are - • Some of the ways in which we plan to do this in the future are -

How do we try to make it more creative? • Visiting Poet • Trip to Pantomime and Theatre groups into school • Talkabouts • School Musical Show • Y6 Shakespeare Workshop • Class Assemblies • World Book Day • Creative Days – African Arts, ECO and European Day • Outdoor Literacy Day

  10. How can you help your child at home? • Read and discuss different types of text with them. • Talk with and listen to your child. • Be enthusiastic for learning and reading yourself. • Support the children in their homework activities.
