Three Gorges Dam • Built on the Yangtze River • Will prevent flooding • Will provide hydroelectric power • Mandatory resettlement of people • Loss of ancient temples
Ring of Fire • Located along the Pacific Rim (aka economic and social region made up of countries surrounding the Pacific Ocean) • Encourages Japan to build flexible structures • Earthquakes and volcanoes happen in Japan
Population Issues • China One Child Rule = China will lose most populated country title • China has more boys because • If a family has more than one child, they must pay a fine.
Religion Popular in Japan Popular in China Shinto Buddhism Confucianism Taoism/Daoism Buddhism
Religion • Confucianism emphasizes the difference between inferiors and superiors, philosophy, ancestors • Buddhism originated in India by Siddhartha Gautama, Four Noble Truths, Nirvana • Shintoism is found mainly in Japan
China Information • Chiang Kai-shek and his Nationalist followers left China and migrated to Taiwan • Hong Kong became a part of China in 1997 after being a part of the British Empire • Western China has a sparse population because of the dry climate (unable to farm) • Ethnocentric because very isolated from other countries due to physical and man made barriers
North Korea • Communist Government • Command Economy • Developed and testing nuclear weapons • Limited economic development • Weak infrastructure
ETC… • Singapore is an economic tiger because of its location • Cities usually develop along major bodies of water for trade purposes • A newly developed country is progressing from labor intensive to high technology intensive • Communism spread into East and SE Asia from the Soviet Union
