  1. MatterAnything that has weight and takes up space

  2. Matter Text pages begin near page 18. Workbook pages 5-10

  3. The phase or state of matter What causes the phase change that takes place? How does the molecular arrangement change?

  4. Water and its extremesBoiling and Freezing

  5. Describe the meaning of the graph below

  6. Matter has properties • Texture matter can be rough or smooth • Shape matter can be round, square etc • Temperature matter can react to heat • Flammability matter can support a flame • Color matter can display a color or have no color at all With your group members, name samples of matter found in the classroom. Make a chart that organizes your information

  7. The building blocks of matter are called ELEMENTS --Elements are arranged in an organized group of information known as the Periodic Table of Elements With your group, write a distinguishing sentence for each of the main groups found on the Periodic Table. Hint- use colors as your guide.

  8. Periodic Table of Elements • More than 100 elements. Arranged according to increasing atomic mass. • Rows are horizontal and called “period.” Think of a period that comes at the end of a horizontal sentence • Family or groups are vertical. These groups all have same valence electron • Atomic Number is the # of protons in a nucleus. • Atomic weight is the # of protons and neutrons.

  9. Student Work With your group, write a distinguishing sentence for each of the main groups found on the Periodic Table. Hint- use colors as your guide. With your group, complete the following WB pages 5-10 Text questions Page 23 #1-4 Page 29 # 1-3 Page 35 # 1-3 WB pages 29-40

  10. Bozeman Science PodcastPeriodic Table

  11. Bozeman Science Podcast • Look for the following • Interesting facts about the Disappearing Spoon • How are the Alkali different from Alkaline Earth elements? • Give examples of metalloids. Are they good conductors? What can Si do? • Where is the Lanthanide group found on the Table? Why? • What is unique about Halogens? • Why are Noble gases unreactive? Name a visual property of Noble gases. • Name some poor metals. • What does CHNOPS mean? • Name transition metals. Are they good conductors of poor conductors.
