Family Bothidae is in the suborder Pleuronectoidei along with the Pleuronectidae, Achiridae and Cynoglossidae. Bothids are bottom fishes. Juveniles and adults have both eyes located on one side of the body, generally on the left side. In Bothids the eye migrates through a slit or hole, which forms below the anterior base of the dorsal fin. Bothids larvae are bilaterally symmetrical and have an extremely laterally compressed body. The larvae are generally relatively large (SL = 120 mm Fukui 1997)
