  1. Social Media Tools and Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences Published in 1983, Gardner cited nine categories

  2. The Divine Nine • Linguistic intelligence • Logical/Mathematical intelligence • Musical/Rhythmic Intelligence

  3. The Divine Nine-cont’d • Bodily/Kinesthetic Intelligence • Spatial Intelligence • Naturalist Intelligence

  4. The Divine Nine – Cont’d • Intrapersonal Intelligence • Existentialist Intelligence • Interpersonal Intelligence

  5. An inquiry based approach • How are learning styles embedded in digital technology/social media? • What are the areas to consider when designing the Neomillennial user experience? (Neomillennail- those born after 1982)

  6. Social Learning Theoryand the Web • According to Vygotsky, optimum cognitive development is contingent on the full social interaction of the learner. • Students thrive best when in a supportive social learning environment • With social networking media, one can take the social interaction to deeper levels

  7. Gardner’s online The article divides the learning intelligences into three categories • A-Thinking: • B-Sensational • C-Communicational

  8. THINKING • Verbal/linguistic to do with words spoken or written. People in this area are generally good at writing, oration, and learning from lectures. • Logical/Mathematical-To do with numbers, logic and abstractions. Those who favor this intelligence general excel in math and computer programming.

  9. SENSATIONAL Visual/Spatial – To do with vision and spatial judgment. Such people excel in art or engineering. Bodily/Kinesthetic – To do with coordination, movements, and doing. These people tend to learn better by doing things and interacting. Auditory/Musical – To do with hearing. Music helps them work better, and helps them learn better from lectures.

  10. COMMUNICATIONAL • Interpersonal Communication- To do with interaction with others. Tend to learn better in discussions. • Intrapersonal Communication – To do with oneself. Tend to learn better in self-regulated learning activities. • Naturalist – Nature: People in this category are not only good with life but also with various functions of it and mechanisms behind it. People in this group tend to end up in biology, or environmental oriented careers.

  11. EXISTENTIALISTIntelligence • not named in a category. • I think it is safe to say that this would fit under the Thinking category.

  12. Learning Theories • Behaviorism – observable behavior; skill learning • Cognitivism- How people think, make decisions and solve problems. • Constructivism – The learner actively constructs or builds new ideas

  13. Constructivist Learning Theoryby Jean Piaget • Learning by doing • Goes beyond cognitivism • Views learning as a process in which the learner actively constructs or builds new ideas or concepts

  14. Learning theory and social media • Social media lends itself to constructivism and cognitivism. • Vygotsky’s Social Learning Theory focuses on two elements. • A-Internalization and B- Zone of Proximal Development.

  15. VYGOTSKY • Internalization refers to knowledge being developed by ones interaction with one’s surrounding culture and society • Social media enhances knowledge development through online software such asFacebookand blogs

  16. Zone of Proximal Development • This concept refers to a range of tasks that can be too difficult for a learner to master by themselves but is made possible with the assistance of a more skilled individual or teacher. • Online learning software such as ___________supports this concept.
