Announcing: Tivoli Storage Manager Suite for Unified Recovery • A bundle of ten Tivoli Storage Manager products offering simplified pricing and licensing with a tiered per Terabyte (TB) metric. • A customer may install as many of the individual bundled products as needed for their environment, there is no per server, per install or PVU charge, they are simply charged for the TB stored in TSM primary storage pools and FastBack repositories. • Does not replace PVU's, it is another option for purchasing TSM products • The TSM Suite for Unified Recovery delivers a comprehensive set of data protection capabilities
Products included in TSM Suite for Unified Recovery bundle TSM Extended Edition: Highly-scalable enterprise-class backup/restore, archive and disaster recovery TSM for Virtual Environments: Advanced protection and flexible recovery of VMware environments TSM for Databases: Non-disruptive protection of Oracle and Microsoft SQL data TSM for ERP: Protects vital SAP R/3 system data more efficiently, consistently and reliably TSM for Mail: Secures Domino and Exchange data; granular restore of Exchange objects TSM for SAN: Maximizes storage network connections for TSM servers and client computers TSM for Space Management: Software that moves inactive data to reclaim online disk space TSM FastBack: Advanced data protection and near-instant recovery for Windows and Linux servers TSM FastBack for BMR: Restore a Windows or Linux Server Operating System volume within an hour TSM FastBack for Exchange: Fast and easy recovery of individual e-mail objects Products not included: • TSM for SharePoint • TSM HSM for Windows • Cristie TBMR/CBMR • TSM for SysBack • FastBack for Workstations / CDP for Files • Tivoli Storage FlashCopy Manager • TSM client device license • System Storage Archive Manager
TSM Suite for Unified Recovery licensing model • The TSM Suite for Unified Recovery delivers value aligned pricing and licensing where customers license per TB for data stored in TSM primary storage pools and data stored in TSM Fastback repository volumes. No charge for replicated DR copies of data • Benefits: • Easy to measure for on-going compliance • Incentives for smart data management: • TSM deduplication and compression reduce stored TB and license costs • Leverage dedicated, lower cost per TB archiving appliance such as the IBM Information archive rather than use backups as archives • Easier for customers and partners to provide TSM on an internal / external charge back model • Simplified procurement with a bundle that delivers comprehensive Unified Recovery Management capabilities
TSM Suite for Unified Recovery licensing • The TSM Suite for Unified Recovery is licensed per TB for data stored in TSM Primary Storage pools and data stored in TSM Fastback repository volumes. • TSM Suite for Unified recovery uses a tiered terabyte (TB) pricing model. The model consists of seven tiers, which are to be used cumulatively. All tiers must be used in order, (begin with the first one and move on to the second one, and so forth) to get to the desired total amount of TB. • Cumulative tiered TB example: Based on the actual TB tiers, the following example is an illustration, using variables for prices, to show how to calculate the prices
TB data measured for TSM Suite for Unified Recovery licensing • The data measured for entitlement purposes for the TSM Suite for Unified Recovery is the data in TSM Primary pools and FastBack Repositories. • Copy pool data and active data pool data are copies of data in primary storage pools and are not counted in the measurement of TB for TSM Suite for Unified Recovery entitlement.
TSM Suite for Unified Recovery - Benefits of Deduplication • TSM and TSM FastBack have built in deduplication capabilities • For TSM pools deduplicated using TSM deduplication, the commands for measuring capacity will measure and report the deduplicated amount of data • Customers using TSM FastBack with TSM Suite for Unified Recovery can view the deduplicated repository size in the user interface and report that for per TB licensing • TSM Suite for Unified Recovery customers gain a cost efficiency for using built in deduplication features by reducing the number of TB in primary storage pools • Competitors like Symantec and CommVault charge extra per TB for deduplication capability and the customer gets no per TB cost savings benefit from its use
How is external (VTL) data deduplication handled in the measurement of capacity? • For primary pool data where the primary pool is on a device that performs deduplication or compression (such as a deduplicating VTL) TSM only understands the data that it sent to that pool and ‘sees’ it as the non-deduplicated amount. • The customer does not realize a cost savings in terms TB reduction from the use of external device (eg. VTL) deduplication with the TSM Suite for Unified Recovery • If you are working a joint TSM and ProtecTIER opportunity, a special bid approach may be used that would allow for special pricing terms to advantage the joint opportunity: • Price based on ProtecTIER repository (usable capacity) size • Provides standardized approach to pricing across accounts • Eliminates need for sizing based on data deduplication ratios • Allows for mix of non-dedupe and deduped devices in primary storage pool • Establishes a pricing methodology for other compression or deduplication technologies
TSM Suite for Unified Recovery – measuring per TB Capacity • Administrative macro commands are available to help you measure TB stored in Tivoli Storage Manager Primary Storage Pools. • There are also instructions available that explain how to use the TSM FastBack graphical user interface to help you measure TB stored in TSM Repositories • The following Technote contains the links to the commands and directions • http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21500482 Sample output from TSM administrative macro command
