  4. Introduction to Classification • Use a simple classification key to identify an unknown substance. • Analyze structural, behavioral, and physiological adaptations to predict which populations are likely to survive in a particular environment. How are living things grouped together? Today’s Goals: • List the levels of organization in order from broadest to most specific. • Identify organisms by their tw0-part names.

  5. Binomial Nomenclature Use the last two classification levels to name an organism. (Genus and Species) The scientific name of an organism is its Genusspecies. Genus name is capitalized. Species name is lower case. Both words are underlined or written in italics. You will underline it!

  6. SPI 0807.5.1 Classification Keys Science Notes 8-Level Classification System Example: Human Beings (Homo Sapiens) 1) Domain: Eukarya 2) Kingdom: Animalia 3) Phylum: Chordata 4) Class: Mammalia 5) Order: Primates 6) Family: Hominoidia 7) Genus: Homo Binomial Nomeclature • 2 part naming system 1st part 2nd part 8) Species: Sapiens

  7. Directions: • You will need a partner today. • Walk around the room and find the Genus names and species names. • Correctly write a two-part scientific name using the options taped to the walls. • You will need five scientific names: Genusspecies. • Use the chart to draw what your five creatures would look like based on their scientific names.
