Creating Presentations with PowerPoint 2003 for the PCHands-On Exercises
Create a New Presentation • Go to the Start menu All Programs Microsoft Office Microsoft PowerPoint 2003 • In the “Getting Started” Task Pane on the right, choose “Create a new presentation” • In the “New Presentation” Task Pane, choose “Blank presentation”
Add Text to Your Title Slide • Your first slide comes up by default in the “Title Slide” format • To add a title to your slide • Click in the ‘Click to add title’ box • Type ‘My First Presentation’ • To add a subtitle to your slide • Click in the ‘Click to add subtitle’ box • Type ‘By: Your Name’ • Hit Enter and add a second line with your partner’s name if you would like
Insert a New Slide • Go to Insert New Slide • By default the layout of the new slide will be ‘Bulleted List’
Bulleted List Slide • Click on the title box and type in ‘Elements’ • Enter information into the Bulleted List • Click inside the bulleted list box • Type ‘Transition Metals,’ Press the ‘Enter’ key • Press the ‘Tab’ key • Type in ‘Titanium,’ Press ‘Enter’ • Press the ‘Tab’ key • Type in ‘Symbol: Ti,’ Press ‘Enter’ • While holding down the ‘Shift’ key, press ‘Tab’ • Type in ‘Gold,’ Press ‘Enter’ • While holding down the ‘Shift’ key, press ‘Tab’ • Type ‘Noble Gases,’ Press ‘Enter’ • Continue the same way as with the transition metals, but add in the information shown • Transition Metals • Titanium • Symbol: Ti • Gold • Noble Gases • Helium • Neon
Insert a New Slide & Change Layout • Go to Insert New Slide • Notice that the layout again defaults to “Bulleted List” and the “Slide Layout” Task Pane shows up on the right • Click on the “Title Only” layout • Note that when you hover over the layouts, you can see their names “Title Only” Layout
Adding Clip Art to a Slide Click Here • Click on the title area and type ‘This Slide Contains Clip Art’ • To switch to the “Clip Art” Task Pane… • Click on the triangle to the right of the words “Slide Layout” • Select “Insert Clip Art” from the drop down list • Under “Search for” type in an item to search for • Under “Search In” make sure that “Everywhere” is selected • Under “Results should be” choose “All media types” • Click the “Search” button • Click on the item that you want to insert • If time permits, try searching again with different parameters
Using the Slide Master: Title Font Note: The Slide Master changes the appearance of all of your slides at once • Go to View Master Slide Master • To change the title font of all your slides • Click on the ‘Click to edit Master title style’ box • Go to Format Font • Change the font to be ‘Arial,’ size 40 • Make the font color blue • Go back to View Normal • Notice that the title fonts of all your slides have changed
Using the Slide Master: Bullets • Go to View Master Slide Master • To change the format of the bullets • Click anywhere on the first level of the bulleted list • Go to Format Bullets and Numbering • Select a bullet style • Edit the rest of the levels in the same way. Try several numbering and bullet styles • Go back to View Normal • Notice that all bulleted lists have the new bullet styles
Viewing Your Presentation • Save your Presentation! You are going to use this presentation for the second exercise • You now have three slides in your presentation • Use the different options in the view menu to view your presentation • Go to View Normal • The main editing view • Shows an outline of your presentation on the left and one slide on the right • Click on the slides in the Outline or Slides list to view and edit other slides in the presentation • Go to View Slide Sorter • Lets you see your full presentation • Click and drag your slides to a different order • Go to View Slide Show • Presents your slides • Click the mouse or press the right arrow to advance to the next • Press Esc to quit • Look at the similar options using the small menu on the bottom left
Background Colors and Textures • Go to Format Background • Click on the empty Select box and choose ‘Fill Effects’ • Click on the ‘Gradient’ tab • Make a two color gradient • You can also make the background a Texture, Pattern, or Picture • Click "OK" • Choose ‘Apply to All’ • All of your slides will now have this new background Select Box
Design Templates • You may have noticed that when you made the colored background, you couldn’t see the text in your slide. Design Templates are predefined formats for your text and background. • Go to the Task Pane, “Slide Design” • Choose one that you like and click on it • Notice that it takes over all the slides in the presentation • Hit Ctrl-Z to undo • Now, right-click on the design template that you like and choose “Apply to selected slides” • Notice that it only affects the current slide • Go to View Master Slide Master • Notice that there are now multiple masters, one for the template and one with your other design changes • Go to View Normal to get out of the slide master
Graphics: WordArt • Go to the first slide in your presentation • Click on the box that has your title ‘My First Presentation’ • Delete the existing title • Click on the border of the title box so that it becomes more solid • Press the ‘Delete’ key to remove the box • Go to Insert Picture WordArt • Choose the format of the WordArt • Type in the text • You can move around and resize your WordArt • Notice that the title can no longer be viewed in the outline on the left. This is normal for anything that you insert beyond the standard templates.
Graphics: Importing Graphics from the Web • Save your presentation • Minimize PowerPoint • Start up Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer • Go to http://www.nih.gov • Right-click on the NIH logo in the upper left corner • Choose ‘Save Image As’ or ‘Save Picture As’ • Save the image on the desktop • Maximize PowerPoint • Go to Insert Picture From File • Navigate to the image that you saved on the desktop • You can move, resize, and rotate this image
Graphics: Screen Shots • To insert a Screen Shot of ‘My Computer’ into your presentation… • Minimize PowerPoint • Double click on ‘My Computer’ • Press Alt + Print Screen (This saves the screen shot into the clipboard) • Go back into PowerPoint and insert a new slide at the end of your presentation, the format should be ‘Title Only’ • Go to Edit Paste • Optional second exercise (You can come back to this one) • Go to http://www.washingtonpost.com and take a screen shot of a page with a picture • Paste the page into another new slide • Click on the image • Use the crop tool to cut away all but the picture you want • ‘Crop’ is located on the picture toolbar, which should appear when the screen shot is selected. If it does not, go to View Toolbars Picture Crop
Multimedia: Slide Transitions Note: Slide transitions are animations between slides that appear in the slide show • Go to the “Slide Transition” Task Pane • Under “Apply to selected slides” choose a transition • The current slide will give a preview of what the transition looks like • If you’d like to see it again, press “Play” at the bottom of the Task Pane • Click on “Apply to All Slides” at the bottom of the Task Pane • Go to View Slide Show to see what it will look like Remember to use the Esc key to exit the slide show
Multimedia: Animation Schemes Note: Animations animate objects within your slide during a slide show • Navigate to the slide with the bulleted list • Go to the “Slide Design – Animation Schemes” Task Pane • Select an animation scheme and see what it looks like • If it does not preview, make sure the “AutoPreview” box is selected at the bottom of the Task Pane • If you want to see it again, press “Play” at the bottom of the Task Pane • Look at a few different schemes, and choose one that you like • Click on “Slide Show” to see in context
Drawing Tools This is a brief introduction to one of the drawing tools covered in the "PowerPoint Topics" course • Click on the arrow tool at the bottom • On your slide, click where you want the arrow to begin and, holding down the mouse button, drag to where you want it to end • You can move, resize, delete, undo, and change the color • For a full set of options, use the drawing toolbar at the bottom or go to Format AutoShape Arrow Line Color Width
