Classroom procedures English 11 Mrs. Loosle Room 169
Procedures are a part of life. They allow complex operations to run smoothly with minimal confusion, low stress, and less wasted time. • Airports • Driving • Restaurants • Movies • School Where else are procedures practiced?
Classroom expectations • The atmosphere in this classroom will be formal and academic, but comfortable. • Students will work hard, learn English, and enjoy the process. • If a visitor walked into our classroom during the day, what should they see?
I expect students to do the following things to make sure the classroom runs smoothly: • Attend class, and arrive on time. • Have materials ready when the bell rings. • Listen when others are speaking. • Follow directions the first time they are given • Get permission before speaking. • Be polite and respectful toward each other. • Stay on-task and focused on English.
Academic expectations • Come to class on time and have materials ready. • Follow teacher’s directions and complete assignments. • Work hard and enjoy the process. • Do your best. • Do not complain; it poisons the atmosphere.
Entering the classroom procedure • Enter the room quickly and quietly. • Pick up any handouts. • Get materials and be seated. • Read the journaling assignment posted on the board and start working. • If you finish the journal early, work on something else quietly. Don’t talk to your neighbors! • Quietly, patiently wait for instruction.
Journal procedure • Pick up handouts, be seated, and gather materials for class. • Read the journaling assignment on the board and start working. • Do not wait for the teacher or the bell. • If you are on time to class and writing in your journal, I will initial the entry. Each initialed entry in worth 5 pts.; entries without initials are worth 3, so you can make up assigned journals, but I only give full points when it’s done on time. School excused absences will be marked full points also. • If you finish the journal early, find something quiet to work on while others are finishing.
When you finish work early… • Quietly read a book • Organize your planner or homework • Sit quietly • Work on homework • Be patient
Daily schedule • Journal assignment • Daily objective and agenda • Teacher-instructions/modeling • Student-guided instruction/practice • Assessment/closure
Class opening procedures • Journal assignment time • Students work on journal • Teacher takes attendance, returns papers, and checks on individual students as needed. II. After the journal assignment • Teacher announces daily/weekly agenda. • Teacher discusses returned papers/feedback. • Journal follow up. • Daily lesson begins.
Tardy procedure • Enter the classroom quietly, pick up the daily handouts, and join in the classroom activities with minimal disruption. • If your tardies continue, there will be consequences. (i.e.: talk with me, parent contact, administration involvement) • If you are tardy more than 20 minutes late to class (unexcused), it will be counted as an unexcused absence.
Absence procedure • When you are absent, check with your table group to find out what you missed. Do not ask the teacher. • If you are missing work from the absence, the teacher will let you know what you are missing and provide the materials needed. • You have up to a week to complete your missed work.
Listening to/ responding to questions • When we are having class discussions, raise your hand to be called on and actively listen to whoever is speaking. • Teacher will give specific instructions when students are to call out answers without first raising their hands. • Ask only questions that are relevant to the lesson. • Be respectful of all comments and ideas, even if they differ from yours.
Getting the class’ attention • The teacher will say, “Listen up” or “I need your attention” and I will hold up my hand. • When you see my hand you are to: • Stop what you are doing. • Look at the teacher. • Sit quietly.
Walking in the hall procedure • When we are walking in the hall (fire drills, writing lab, library): • Stay with the group. • Go quickly and quietly to the destination.
End of the day dismissal procedure • Hand in daily work. • Put away materials. Make sure table area is neat and trash is picked up. • When the bell rings, be seated and look at the teacher (All students must be seated). • Teacher dismisses the class NOT the bell. • Push in chairs and proceed quickly and quietly out the door.
Classroom rules • Follow teacher’s directions. • Do not disrupt class. • Be polite and courteous to others. • Stay seated and on task. • Do not throw or toss anything. • Keep hands and objects to yourself. • No profanity. • FOLLOW TEACHER’S DIRECTIONS.
CLASSROOM CONSEQUENCES • Verbal warning • Seating change • Send to office • Conference with teacher • Parent contact • Other: detention, behavior contract
Students leaving the classroom • Get permission from the teacher without disrupting class. • Your must have a hall pass to leave the room. • Teacher will not let you use the hall pass to go to your car. • Only one person at a time will use the hall pass. This includes using the bathroom.
Bathroom use • The best time for bathroom use is between each class period. • You should not leave class to use the bathroom unless it is truly necessary. • You must get permission from the teacher without disrupting the class. • Only one person at a time will use the bathroom.
