Issues… • The LOI limits the geographic scope: south shore of Oahu. • Funding is limited overall • Should “Water Quality” be limited to moorings as suggested in LOI? • Other options? Where to do Experimental/Developmental work?
Major points • Need rapid response, • Keep the PRODUCT simple: this is a trigger! • Provide limited data… others mount sampling expeditions • Make product available to gov’t agencies and NGO’s • Approach provides basic infrastructure for future development. (if we have infrastructure and a trigger to alert when sampling should take place, researchers will develop projects for which they will seek funding from traditional sources) • Kilo Nalu is cabled…should tap into existing system • Should also cable any new station (if possible)
Consensus • TWO MAIN INSTRUMENTED SITES • Simple instrumentation: (data collection and trigger for sampling) • Include automatic water samplers triggered by above sensors • Approach allows collection of water samples that can subsequently be analyzed by researchers. • Network (4-5 stn) with T, Cond & telemetry • Need funding for technician to support data stream
Water Quality Network Two Nearshore Moorings with: • Temperature & salinity (SBE37) • Chl a (WETStar WS1S-893P) • Total suspended solids (WET Labs Cstar) • Nitrate (ISUS sensor) • Dissolved oxygen (SBE 43) • McLaine or Envirotech Automated water sampler Four “Bare-Bones” Systems Along Shoreline • Temperature and Conductivity • Maybe optical properties? Data telemetry for all stations (moorings and shoreline) Technician time for maintaining systems and data stream
T, Cond, (optical?) Major Stations Location Map
