Endocrine System • Function: releases hormones that help your body maintain homeostasis
What is a hormone? • A hormone is a chemical messenger that helps the body maintain homeostasis • Its like a text message being the ‘messenger’ that maintains the balance in your social life
Glands • Hypothalamus- regulates which hormones get secreted when • Pituitary- secretes many hormones; known as the ‘master gland’ • Thyroid- secretion of the thyroxin hormone that deals with metabolism • Adrenal- maintains balance in blood pressure, as well as estrogen and testosterone levels. • Pancreas- regulates blood glucose levels
Hormones • Thyroxin- helps maintain proper metabolism • Iodine is necessary for thyroxin to function • Where do we get iodine? • Estrogen- female sex hormone, triggers ovulation, promotes female sexual characteristics • Progesterone- maintains the uterine wall • Testosterone- male sex hormone, promotes male sexual characteristics
Hormones • Insulin- absorbs glucose from the blood stream to maintain proper levels of sugar in our bodies • Corticosteroids- involved in stress response, immune response, inflammation, and metabolism • Adrenaline- increases heart rate, blood flow, and level of blood glucose levels
If blood sugar goes up what happens to insulin? • If adrenaline goes up what happens to insulin?
If blood sugar goes up what happens to insulin? • increases • If adrenaline goes up what happens to insulin? • decreases
Diabetes Diabetes is usually a lifelong (chronic) disease in which there are high levels of sugar in the blood. • 25.8 Million people have diabetes in the world • How is Diabetes treated?
Diabetes • Type 1: Usually happens younger in life as a result of a viral infection that attacks the islet cells of pancreas making them unable to produce insulin • Type 2: Usually as a result of environmental factors such as weight gain, diet, and stress. Instead of the islet cells being unable to to make insulin, they may not respond to insulin appropriately. Both result in increased blood sugar levels which causes major organ damage!
Thyroid Disease • Hypothyroidism- not enough thyroid • Weight gain, fatigue • Hyperthyroidism- too much thyroid • Weight loss, sweating
Menstrual Cycle • Cause: an unfertilized egg and the uterine lining need to be discharged each month • Purpose: to prepare for the next egg to be release in the next month • Effect: About a week of menstruation in females each month
How do you actually get pregnant? Fertilization occurs in the fallopian tube!!!!!!!!
How do birth control pills work? • They prevent the egg from leaving the ovary no ovulation • They also thicken the cervical fluid so sperm have a harder time traveling up into the fallopian tube no fertilization
What hormones do birth control pills have? • Progesterone- this hormone maintains the uterine wall. This means as long as progesterone is present, no period and no ovulation • Estrogen- the levels of estrogen in the pill prevent ovulation from happening • Estrogen stops the pituitary gland from release FSH and LH which cause the ovary to release an egg
During what time of a female’s cycle can a women become pregnant?
