Current Core • Established in 1997 • 42-46 SCH • 37 EEOs • Why change the core? • THECB wants the core to help students build real world skills and capabilities
Philosophical Shift Old Core • Accumulate credits • Across a wide academic background • EEOs were unique to a discipline New Core • Master six key skills • In a variety of academic disciplines • Core objectives are shared across the institution

The Issues • How to handle four credit hour courses • Science courses • Foreign Language courses • How to allocate the Component Area Option
Four SCH Dilemma • New core allocates • 6 hours to sciences • 3 hours to Language, culture, and philosophy • But • Science and foreign language courses are 4 SCH
Option 1 • Account for extra hours at the degree level • Science • Six hours count towards core • Two hours accounted for in each degree • The Math • Current Core ranges from 42-46 SCH • New Core 42 SCH
Option 2 • Account for extra science hours using credits from the Component Area Option • Leaves four hours • Decreases flexibility in how we use the CAO
Component Area Option • 6 SCH to be applied by the University • Common opinions so far • Fourth Science hour • Communication • Ethics • Address student weaknesses
