  3. The Controversy Explored God’s Sovereignty Calvinism: God’s sovereignty is absolute, unconditional, unequivocal and unlimited. God acts according to the counsel of His will without consideration of the outcome. Potential Danger: Fatalism—people and events are orchestrated by God without consideration of human choice. Arminianism: God has limited His control in response to man’s freedom and response. God’s decrees are determined by His foreknowledge of man’s response. Potential danger:Man merits salvation because of the choice he has made to act in faith.

  4. The Controversy Explored Man’s Depravity Calvinism: Because of Adam’s sin, man is totally depraved and as such is incapable of taking any step that would initiate his salvation. Potential Danger: Man’s will is overpowered by God and he has no alternative but to comply with God. Arminianism: Through Adam man inherited a corrupted, depraved nature. Through prevenient grace, God prepares a person to respond to salvation. Potential danger:God’s power is limited when it comes to effectually bringing mankind to salvation.

  5. The Controversy Explored Election Calvinism: Before creation God chose those who would be the recipients of salvation, a decision that was not predetermined by man’s response. Potential Danger: God arbitrarily assigns people to hell. Arminianism: Election is based on the foreknowledge of God. He chose those He knew would say yes. Potential danger:The counsel of God’s will is predetermined by the choices of people.

  6. The Controversy Explored Christ’s Atonement Calvinism: Christ’s atoning death was for those previously chosen by the Father thus effectively accomplishing His will. Potential Danger: Salvation, rather than the establishment of God’s kingdom becomes the focus. Arminianism: Christ’s atoning death was for everyone but is only effective for those who choose to exercise saving faith. Potential danger:God’s eternal purposes in salvation were predetermined by man’s willingness to respond with saving faith.

  7. The Controversy Explored Grace Calvinism: God extends common grace to all but this will not bring man to salvation. God’s irresistible grace draws man to salvation. It cannot be resisted or obstructed. Potential Danger: Man simply becomes a robot who responds to the controls of a powerful creator. Arminianism: Through the prevenient grace that is given to all, man is able to respond to God and exercise his will and accept salvation. Man can also resist and obstruct God’s grace. Potential danger:Prevenient grace reduces the effectiveness of saving grace—it works for some but not with all.

  8. The Controversy Explored Perseverance Calvinism: Believers are eternally secure in their salvation because the one who began the good work will perform it until the day of Christ. Potential Danger: Once you are in the boat you can’t fall out, get pushed out or jump out. Arminianism: By the exercise of free will a person can turn away from their faith and remove themselves from the family of God. Potential danger:I work to secure salvation rather than focus on my relationship with the Savior.

In Him 11* also we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to His purpose who works all things after the counsel of His will, 12 to the end that we who were the first to hope in Christ should be to the praise of His glory. 13* In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation--having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14* who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of God’s own possession, to the praise of His glory.

These are in accordance with the working of the strength of His might 20* which He brought about in Christ, when He raised Him from the dead, and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, 21* far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age, but also in the one to come. 22* And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and gave Him as head over all things to the church, 23* which is His body, the fulness of Him who fills all in all.
