Student Development Theory • Student Development Theory • Programs based on student development models are designed to stimulate self-understanding, to strengthen skills, and/or to increase knowledge. • Basic Assumptions • 1. The individual student must be considered as a whole. • 2. Each student is a unique person and must be treated as such. • 3. The total environment of the student is educational and must be used. • 4. The major responsibility for a student's personal and social development rests with the student.

Contextual Statement • The success of the DSAEM is a direct result of the collective contributions of its departments. • These contributions are enhanced by each department’s commitment to Texas Tech University (TTU) student success. • The Input, Environment and Output (IEO) model (Astin, 1993) and the Psychosocial Theory of Student Development (Chickering, 1993) are two such models.
