As a result he came to believe that he was the last prophet to teach others of Allah • Meccans feared that the traditional Arab Gods would be neglected and that Mecca would no longer be a center for pilgrims • He attracted many devoted followers and became a popular leader, he united Muslims, Arabs and Jews during the hostilities between Medina and Mecca • He used Mecca as a base from which to work toward unifying the Arabian peninsula under Islam
