As a result he came to believe that he was the last prophet to teach others of Allah • Meccans feared that the traditional Arab Gods would be neglected and that Mecca would no longer be a center for pilgrims • He attracted many devoted followers and became a popular leader, he united Muslims, Arabs and Jews during the hostilities between Medina and Mecca • He used Mecca as a base from which to work toward unifying the Arabian peninsula under Islam
Beliefs and Practices of Islam • There is only one God, each person is responsible for his or her actions • Muslims do not separate their personal and religious life, Carrying out the five pillars and other customs ensures that Muslims live their religion while serving in their communities • The Quran was written in Arabic, the language spread widely as Muslims expanded into many lands • Shari’a law required Muslims to extend religious tolerance to Christians and Jews
