The Islamic Revolution in Iran • 1979-Islamic Revolution • Ayatollah Khomeini took over. The shah had to flee. • Ayatollahs, religious leaders, ruled according to Islamic law. • Iranians are Shi’a Muslims. • Western influences wiped from the country. • Women had to wear the chador, a long black cloak. • Iran supported revolutions in other Shi’a countries. • -Khomeini died in 1989.
War Between Iraq and Iran • -In 1980, Saddam Hussein of Iraq took over a border area of Iran. • War started between Iraq and Iran for eight years. • Hussein and his government were Sunni. • 1983-Iran reported Iraqi use of chemical weapons • (The Geneva protocol requires that the international community respond to chemical warfare)
