Student Retention at UW-Superior Jim Miller March 4, 2008
UWS Enrollment Trend • UW-Superior’s enrollment peaked around 1970, then dropped substantially until around 1990, when it peaked again to almost the 1970 level. • Then it declined again through the 90’s • Enrollment increased during the late 90’s • Enrollment was relatively steady from 2000 to 2006
UW-Superior Students How do they measure-up?
Pretty Well!!! • UW-Superior freshmen are similar to those enrolling at most of the UW-Comprehensives
However, our retention and graduation rates do not compare favorably
The Freshmen Class of 2006 • Let’s look at some of the retention results for the class that entered in Fall 2006 • The retention rate is computed on the behavior of the First Time – Full Time – New Freshmen who enrolled that September. • The average retention for this class was 63%
How these data are presented • You will see charts that show various characteristics and the RETENTION RATE, by percent for students with that attribute • The slides are in different orders, so it’s important to reference the labels • # of students in category is shown ( ) • This shows correlation, not necessarily cause!!!!!
Pre-enrollment Academic Indicators • Let’s start by looking at the incoming academic indicators • ACT • Composite • English • Math • Reading • High School Class Rank • College Credit earned while in High School
All other U.S. Zips = 56% of 96
Personal Characteristics • Gender • Ethnicity/Race • High School Grad Year • First Generation Status • Level of Financial Need
What happened when they got here? • On Campus or Off Campus • What major did they choose? • Grades in core classes • English • Math • Communications • HPHP • 1st Semester GPA
Where did they go? • Of the 108 students who did not return, at least 62 enrolled at other colleges. • 35 transferred to two-year colleges (all public) • 12 transferred to other four-year UW campuses • 8 transferred to other public four-year universities • 7 transferred to private four-year colleges • 46 did not enroll anywhere (90% accurate)
Where did they go? ITASCA COMMUNITY COLLEGE JOHN A LOGAN COLLEGE MADISON AREA TECHNICAL COLLEGE METROPOLITAN STATE UNIVERSITY MILWAUKEE AREA TECH COLLEGE MINNEAPOLIS COLLEGE OF ART AND DESIGN NORTH LAKE COLLEGE - DALLAS NORTHERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY SAVANNAH COLLEGE OF ART & DESIGN UNIVERSITY OF DENVER - COLORADO UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA - DULUTH UW - BARRON UW - EAU CLAIRE UW - GREEN BAY UW - LA CROSSE UW - MILWAUKEE UW - STEVENS POINT UW - WHITEWATER WINONA STATE UNIVERSITY
What matters? • High School Grades/Rank • College Courses while in HS positive • Choice of Major • Experiences/Success in core courses
Other Observations • 60% of students who leave UWS continue their education – more than ½ of them go to community colleges • Financial Need, First Generation, Gender, campus residency & ACT scores do not seem to matter • Uncertain goals and poor preparation = high risk of attrition
