UW-Superior General Education Committee Charge

1. UW-Superior General Education Committee Charge The General Education Committee (GEC) provides oversight for the University's General Education Program.  Its responsibilities include:  1) Review of proposed general education courses for inclusion and placement within the program; 2) Coordination of general education assessment and continuous improvement, including regular review of general education offerings; 3) Development and maintenance of criteria for general education courses and report criteria changes (or proposed changes) to the Undergraduate Academic Affairs Council (UAAC) and the Faculty Senate; 4) Review of other issues related to the General Education Program as referred to the GEC by the UAAC and/or the Faculty Senate.  The GEC reports all of its recommendations to the UAAC.

2. Assessment Cycle Based on the interpretations, what actions (such as pedagogical or curricular changes) are recommended to improve a GE course or a GE program? How appropriate are GE learning goals to the mission of the institution and program? To the students? How can we tell that student achieved each of the GE learning goal? What specific outcomes should students be able to demonstrate? At what level? What evidence is appropriate to know students’ achievement in each learning goal/outcome? What points should evidence be collected? Where? By whom? How should evidence be reported? How well is a course helping students meet GE goals? How well is a GE program as a whole helping students meet GE goals?

General Education Assessment Models • “Standardized Test” Model • Utilizes standardized tests commercially available. • Institutional Portfolio Model • A group of designated faculty/staff assess a sample of appropriate students’ works, utilizing common rubrics and standards • Embedded Assessment Model • Each course participates in assessment in its own capacity • Utilizes common rubrics or standards. • Combines course reviews with student learning assessment. • E-Portfolio Model • E-portfolio to capture each student’s development and achievement in each learning goal. • Utilizes common rubrics or standards. • Mixed Method Model
