Chinese looked down on all foreigners • Qing Emperor felt they had everything they needed (self sufficient) • Little interest in trading with the West • Europeans desperately wanted to get into Asian market • Europeans began smuggling opium into China for nonmedical use • 12 million Chinese addicted to opium China
