Asian Imperialism SWBAT understand imperialism’s effects in Asia and the events that led to the Opium Wars and Boxer Rebellion in China
Chinese looked down on all foreigners • Qing Emperor felt they had everything they needed (self sufficient) • Little interest in trading with the West • Europeans desperately wanted to get into Asian market • Europeans began smuggling opium into China for nonmedical use • 12 million Chinese addicted to opium China
Chinese Emperor attempted to stop trafficking of opium • Britain refused • Britain’s advanced ships easily defeated Chinese • Chinese lose war and Hong Kong is given to the British Opium War
