Quick Census Facts • Complete count mandated by U. S. Constitution every 10 years • Original purpose was to determine congressional representation • Census now used for an amazing range of information gathering tasks • Only comprehensive way to know where the nation as a whole is headed; identify trends • It is strictly confidential
2010 CENSUS SURVEY FORM • Long form eliminated for 2010 • Now 10 basic questions per resident • Printed in multiple languages; will have forms in Spanish available in Macomb • “Be counted” assistance centers will be at City Hall and in Student Union at WIU • Forms mailed out in about mid March; return date is April 1st; there will be individual follow ups on non returns
Why It Matters to City of Macomb • Various funding sources for the City are dependant on Census counts • Sales Tax • Motor Fuel Tax • State Use Tax • These funds supply City with approximately $120/person each year • An undercount of only 100 persons would result in City losing $12,000/year for the next 10 years; or $120,000 total !
