Comedian • Avoid Jokes • You are not a comedian • This is not a comedy sketch • Always disastrous unless you are a natural • YOU – are not a natural
Speak Clearly • Don’t shout • Don’t whisper • Enunciate clearly • Take Your Time • Don’t rush • Don’t talk slow on purpose • Talk at a natural pace Your Voice
Pause For Effect • Deliberately pause at key points • Emphasises the importance of a particular point you are making • My Nervous Hands • “OMG.. I’m up here. People are staring at me. What am I going to do. I know, I’ll put my hands in my pockets…. Noooo, nooo, I pull my sleaves down to cover them…. Nooo, nooo, I’ll hide them behind my back… Noooo, nooo, I roll them up in the bottom of my shirt….” • Sound Familiar? Emphasis
Emphasis • My Nervous Hands • USE YOUR HANDS • Use them to emphasise points • But don’t overdo it • If it looks like you are conducting an orchestra, you are over doing it • Interlace them in front of you • Delivery • A presentation is all about delivery • To make the presentation interesting, change your delivery, but don’t make it obvious • Change your speed • Change your pitch
Look, Look, Look • “I’m up here. People are looking at me… What do I do. I know… I’ll stare at the floor… Nooo, nooo, I’ll stare at the ceiling…. Nooo, noooo, I’ll stare at the wall….. Yes, If I stare at anything but the audience then they won’t know I’m here.” • Eye Contact • Look at the audience AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE • Don’t stare • Don’t fixate on one individual – Creeeeeeepy • It’s tough, but scan, connect, move, connect, move • Look your audience in the eye • Look at the audience’s foreheads
No Butts • Face Forward • Don’t face the display, face your audience • Don’t stand in a position so you are blocking the screen • If your audience can see your butt, you are facing the wrong direction
No Dancing • Movement • Avoid moving too much • Pacing up and down or back and forth can unnerve your audience • Some movement is good • No rocking, swaying, dancing etc… • If you are going to move, then the movement must be NATURAL
MOST IMPORTANT • Never • Ever, Ever • Ever, Ever • Ever, Ever • Ever • Ever • Ever • Read your presentation • I can read, you can read, we all can read, so you don’t need to read it • Referring to your slides, or notes is perfectly fine, take a glance, then speak
Finally • HAVE SOME FUN • The five or so minutes you are going to be up there is not going to kill you, so enjoy it • Your presentation will be over, when it’s over
