  2. Tobacco • Plant grown in the U.S., China, Brazil, and India • In the U.S., tobacco is grown in the southeastern states • Leaves of a tobacco plant are dried and aged for 2 to 3 years • Then used to make cigarettes, cigars, chewing tobacco

Chemicals in Tobacco Tobacco smoke contains over 4,000 different chemicals. • At least 50 are known carcinogens (cause cancer in humans) and many are poisonous • Nicotine: an additive substance; stimulant drug found in tobacco. • Stimulates the nervous system • Dulls the taste buds • Constricts the blood vessels • Increases heart rate and blood pressure • As addictive as heroin, cocaine and alcohol

Chemicals in Tobacco continued • Tar- sticky, thick fluid that is formed when tobacco is burned. • as tar penetrates the smoker’s respiratory system, it destroys cilia, which are tiny hair like structures that line the upper airways and protects against infections • Contains carcinogens which cause lung cancer.

  5. Chemicals in Tobacco continued • Carbon Monoxide: a colorless, odorless, poisonous gas that is produced when tobacco burns • Same deadly gas contained in automobile exhaust • It takes the place of oxygen in the blood • Lack of oxygen an affect the smoker’s vision, hearing, and judgment.

  7. Other Ingredients Found in Cigarettes • Arsenic (rat poison) • Ammonia (household cleaner) • Benzene (rubber cement) • Carbon Monoxide (deadly gas) • Formaldehyde (embalming fluid) • Cyanide (used in gas chambers) • Methanol (poisonous liquid alcohol) • Acetone (nail polish remover)

Why do People use Tobacco? • There are 50 million users in the United States today • Stress • Cope with stress or uncomfortable feelings such as depression, anger, boredom, and anxiety • social pressure • View smoking as a sign of adulthood • Make them look sophisticated • Peer pressure • Advertising

  9. Why People DO NOT Use Tobacco • Harmful to their health • Socially unacceptable • People date non-smokers • expensive

Types of Smokers • The Pleasure Smoker • Social smoker, not yet addicted to nicotine • The Negative Effect Smoker • Smokes to relieve stress (psychologically dependent) • The Habitual Smoker • Addicted (physically dependent) to nicotine. Desires cigarettes • The Heavy Smoker • Chain smoker, they constantly need and have a flow of nicotine • Physically and psychologically dependent • Will go through withdrawals without nicotine
