Belize • Belize is a small country in Central America. • Roughly half of the population is under the age of 19 years. • A large portion of education in Belize is delivered through a "Church-State Relationship." • Expect hot & humid weather, much like S.C.
Our Missionarieshttp://anchorholdbelize.org/ • Guidance provided by Dr. Lisa Williams. • Lisa is a missionary with the General Board of Global Ministries of The UMC. • She serves as volunteer coordinator for the Belize/Honduras District. is She is based in Belize City. • Lisa and her husband, Rev. James Williams, also a missionary, have been Individual Volunteers in Mission in Belize since 2011.
Belmopan, Belize • Belmopan is the capital of Belize. The capital was moved from the Belize City area after Hurricane Hattie destroyed most of Belize City in 1961. • The first phase of construction of Belmopan was completed in 1970. • While the Belmopan area is growing, there is a deficit of high schools.
Belmopan Methodist High School • The construction of the new Methodist high school began in early 2011. Four classrooms were completed for use in September 2013. • Lack of funding is primary reason that the project is not further along. UMVIM teams from the USA have worked on the school, but it is a massive undertaking. • This is the TOP priority mission in Belize!
What we would do at Belmopan HS • Construction! Carrying and laying blocks, mixing concrete and painting. • A supervisor and paid workers will be there to lead and guide us in our efforts. • The Methodist church is beside the high school, so we would have access to water and a place to rest as needed.
How else would we serve? • Engage with children (all girls) at nearby non-denominational orphanage. • Deliver bulk goods to local people. • Support the local church as needed (visiting & inviting people to church.)
Camalote Camp Belize • 5 acre camp run by Ray Jordan from SC. • Camp hosts only 2-3 mission, humanitarian or academic teams at a time. • Reasonable and comfortable after a long day.
All rooms have air conditioning, fans, and a private bathroom with shower. Bed linens, towels, and toiletries are provided.
Other Perks of Camolate Camp • Camp cook knows how to prepare food for Americans. • Available rental of vans to go to work site. • Camp director will pick us up at airport. • Low cost use of washer and dryers so you can pack less. • Water & Coke products available on site at low cost.
The Week • Saturday (July 11): Arrival • Sunday: Church at 8am & visit local Maya Ruin in afternoon • Monday-Thursday: Work at Site • Friday: Fun day (Cave tubing or snorkeling) • Saturday (July 18): Go home
Requirements of Mission Team Members • Minimum age is 16 years old. • Adults must go through Safe Sanctuary training and background check. • Team members must participate in fundraisers, meetings and events. • Everyone must complete appropriate forms/pay fees by due dates. • Approximate expected cost $1500 per person (excluding spending money, passport and immunizations.)
Fundraising Ideas • Church Bazaar • Sweetheart dinner February 14 • Parents Night Out • Donation letters to families and friends • Other ideas To Be Determinedby Team • Personal sacrifices. Ask for mission money instead of Christmas & Birthday gifts.
What now? • Pray for God’s guidance. • If you feel called to be a part of the Belize Mission Team, you will be asked to commit to the meetings, events, fundraisers, etc… • A deposit of $150 to hold your spot will be due by August 31, 2014. • Payments of $150 per month. • Other things to think about: passport & immunizations.
