MY LEARNING JOURNAL By Sarah Allen 8.2 Year 8 Collaborative Unit 2010
Week 4 - Monday Today was our first day in the flexible learning centre. We all had to watch some tutorials on how to organise our work and individual learning, and we also had to watch a video about Kurt Fearnly and answer some questions. I learnt how to set out my goals and also how to use a lotus diagram for my ideas. I chose ‘A Healthy Balance’ for my cornerstone piece and it looks challenging which is good. What was bad about today was all the tutorials. They were too confusing and there was too many of them.
Week 4 - Tuesday Today we got together in our working parties and pick a convenor. We also had to set up a Google docs account so we could create surveys. I watched a tutorial on how to make an account and then how to create a survey. It seems simple enough. After that I then started to write out some draft questions to put in my survey. Today was really good because I learnt how to create a survey and an account. The bad thing was that I had to watch more tutorials.
Week 4 - Wednesday Today I finished my draft questions for my survey. I then created my survey using Google docs and then I sent it to everyone in my working party. I got most of their responses and I also had to answer a few surveys. Most of the surveys were good but a few didn’t make much sense. It was good that we got feedback from our working party members so we knew what we could do to improve our surveys. I learnt how to send a survey to people today.
Week 4 - Thursday Today I read all the feedback from my working party members and made some changes to my survey. I then sent it to 20 people so I can have an idea of an average teenagers diet and exercise routines. It was good to finally get that out of the way and get some results. I then watched the Google searching tutorial. I also started on some research for my cornerstone piece. It wasn’t so good that I had to watch another tutorial, but it was good to finally get started on the cornerstone piece.
Week 4 - Friday Today was the last day in the flexible learning centre for this week. We got together in our working parties again too answer some questions and also give some feedback to those of us who hadn’t sent out their final surveys. After that I checked some of the results for my survey. I then completed this learning journal and finished off anything else that was incomplete. Overall, I think this week was a good introduction into the collaborative unit, but it would have been better if there was a bit more work on the actual cornerstone pieces, and less time on the goal setting and tutorials.
Week 7 - Monday Today we were back in the flexible learning centre for our second week. I viewed the tutorials on downloading data from Google docs, and Using Excel to make graphs. I then got the results of my survey, but a lot of the answers came up as dates so I couldn’t really work much with them. I created a few graphs on Excel and then continued on to my research for my cornerstone piece. I viewed ‘Starting Points’ and then went on to the Go For Your Life website, which gave me a lot of information.
Today I continued on with my research for my cornerstone piece. I looked some more at the ‘Go For Your Life’ website and found a lot of good information and some meal plans on what teenagers should eat in a day, and some healthy snacks. I then went on to start my ‘Progress Report’. Its better this week that we get to actually work on our projects, instead of mucking around with goal sheets and learning journals like this. Doing this learning journal gets boring after a while. Week 7 - Tuesday
Week 7 - Wednesday Today I continued on with my ‘Progress Report’ and finished it. We then broke up into our working parties to discuss what we have done since the start of the week and what we are going to do for the rest of the week. People in the group were mostly up to the same thing, using the wiki page to upload our work, but some where a bit behind. I then went back and continued on with this learning journal, and learning how to use the wiki page through the tutorial.
Week 7 - Thursday Today I continued on with my research for my cornerstone piece. But first I watched a tutorial on inviting my assessment teacher onto my Wikispace. My assessment teacher is Mrs. Abraham. My Wikispace is working well. I also uploaded my lotus diagram onto my Wikispace. I then continued on with this and my research. I think I have a lot of good information to use for my project. I still think that there are too many tutorials to watch.
Week 7 - Friday Today was our last day in the flexible learning centre for week 7. I went into Doc 9 to see what else I had to load up to my Wikispace, and I had 2 more things to do. I loaded them up then continued on with my research into my cornerstone piece. Overall this week was better than the last because we actually got to do some work on our projects.
Week 10 - Monday Today was the start of our last week in the flexible learning centre. First I watched tutorial 13 ‘Putting It All Together’. I then started to finish getting all the information I needed and organising it.
Week 10 - Tuesday Today I started making my diet program. I used my research on the topic to help me figure out what a teenager should eat to keep themselves healthy.
Week 10 - Wednesday Today I continued on with my cornerstone piece. I finished my diet program and almost finished my exercise program. My exercise program has to include a good amount of exercise for a teenager, but also must leave time for rest, recovery , homework and leisure activities.
Week 10 - Thursday Today I finished my exercise program. I then started my PowerPoint that will bring everything together and make it a well presented piece. I am glad that this week we finally got to fully work on our pieces.
Week 10 - Friday Today was our last day in the flexible learning centre and our last day in school working on our cornerstone pieces. I continued working on my PowerPoint and tried to finish some of my other work like this journal and my goal setting sheet. Overall I think that the Collaborative Unit had a slow, pointless start, but once we finally got to work on our actual project, it didn’t turn out too bad.
