  2. About Me • Rutgers University • Masters in Special Education • 8th year of teaching

  3. Goals • Teach tolerance and acceptance • Increase confidence, independence, and build self esteem • Instill a love of learning • Provide positive fifth grade experience • Prepare students for Middle School

  4. Expectations • Be prepared for class with all necessary materials • Keep organized binders in each subject area • Record and complete homework regularly • Move quietly in the hallway when moving from class to class • Be respectful of others • Act responsibly and take ownership for behavior

  7. LANGUAGE ARTS • Our Balanced Literacy approach uses authentic reading and writing experiences that are consistently student-centered. • This approach offers students access to a great variety of literary experiences.

  8. READING Making Meaning and S.P.I.R.E. These programs teach specific strategies for students to become effective readers. • Questioning • Making connections • Making inferences • Visualizing • Summarizing • Reflecting • Synthesizing

  9. GUIDED READING • Students will read materialswhile focusing on specific strategies to enhance comprehension. • Literature circles provide a way for students to engage in critical thinking and reflection as they read, discuss, and respond to books.

  10. INDEPENDENT READING • This helps develop good reading habits. Our goal is to foster an environment where students find reading enjoyable and easy to do. • Students will have access to digital and print resources in the classroom to practice fluency and comprehension. • Students are required to read a minimum of 15-20 minutes per day at home. Reading logs are due every Monday with a parent signature.

  11. WRITING • Being a Writer - Students will develop their writing based on their own topics and interests. They will be exposed to many different genres of writing and will be encouraged and hopefully inspired to model different styles of writing. The emphasis is on working through the stages of the writing process - prewriting, drafting, revising, proofreading and editing, publishing. • Styles of Writing - narrative, expository, descriptive, persuasive, report writing, response to literature

WRITING • Expanding Expression Tool (EET) - a multisensory approach to improving oral and written language • Word Work – Spelling and Vocabulary Instruction through SPIRE, Word Study and Word of the Week • Grammar - Students will also develop oral language and proofreading skills. Individual skills will be taught and reinforced in written work in all subjects.
