Dependency Model vs. Capacity Building • Dependency: Belief that THE answer lies outside with an expert. The expert is always needed to solve the issues. • Capacity: Belief that there may be many answers which are already present in the system. New learning can be applied locally to solve issues. 4 R’s of Coaching Lori Northcott for UI Horizons Community Coaches
Phases of Coaching Lori Northcott for UI Horizons Community Coaches
Systems Thinking • The whole is greater than the sum of the parts: patterns, relationships, connections and interrelatedness of the whole system • Intervention/Action in one part of the system will impact the entire system Lori Northcott for UI Horizons Community Coaches
Reflection What tools do I have? What tools need to be developed? Lori Northcott for UI Horizons Community Coaches
Nature and Process of Change • The resolve to change occurs when there is an imperative that catalyzes critical mass of discomfort with the present state and justifies suffering through the transition phase while moving toward the desired state. • Resistance to change is natural and inevitable However, it is not so much the change people resist, as “the ambiguity that results when the familiar ceases to be relevant” and the resulting loss that is perceived. Questions • What new knowledge, skill or attitude did you develop today? • How will you take action based on what you learned? • What questions do you a have for me? Lori Northcott for UI Horizons Community Coaches
