  1. SQ3R Reading Method Study Skills Lesson 1

  2. Survey • Look at the title, headings, subheadings, and format. • Look at pictures and their captions. • Read bold or italicized words.

  3. Survey (continued) • Scan the text focusing on the first and last paragraph and the first and last sentence of each paragraph. • Read any questions or summary at the end of the chapter or text. • Determine the main idea of the passage. Ask yourself, “What is this about?”.

  4. Question • Turn the title, headings, and subheadings into questions using the question stems: who, what, when, where, and why. • Read the questions after the passage. • Ask yourself, “What do I already know about this topic?” and make a prediction.

  5. Read • Read through the text slowly and carefully, one paragraph at a time. • If you have a question from that paragraph, look for the answer as you read. • Slow down on difficult parts.

  6. Read (continued) • Stop and REREAD parts that you do not understand. • Try to visualize what you are reading like a movie in your head.

  7. Recite • Summarize what you have just read in your own words. • Recall the main ideas of each paragraph aloud. • Write your notes, summary, or answers to questions next to the passage.

  8. Recite (continued) • Underline or highlight important points. • Ask yourself how the main topics/headings, sub-topics/subheadings, details, examples, and vocabulary are related.

  9. Review • Reread and answer the questions. If you are not sure, look back at the text and your notes and find the answer. • Answer the questions at the end of the chapter. • Ask yourself the questions or keywords to see if you can provide the answer or definition.
