Review • Vocabulary-GI, Victory Garden, Atlantic Charter, D-Day, Holocaust, Nuremberg Trials, Concentration Camps, Island Hopping, Kamikaze • Name the Totalitarian leaders of this time. • Why were they able to take control of their countries? • How did WWII begin in Europe and Asia? • What were the underlying causes? • Who were the Axis Powers? Allied Powers?

  3. The US Aids It’s Allies • The US began WWII under a policy of Isolationism. • 1935-1937-passed the Neutrality Acts-illegal to sell or lend equipment. • 1939- Cash and Carry Policy was used. • 1941- Lend-Lease Act- to those who were vital to us-we later protected these shipments.

  4. Pacific Campaign • Japan wanted to build an empire-needed resources of fuel, iron, rubber etc. • Decided to take Allied holdings in the Pacific. • Dec. 7th 1941-attack of Pearl Harbor- “date that will live in infamy”-sank or damaged 19 ships and 2400 dead.

  6. Continued • April of 1942 Doolittle’s raid was a quick answer to Pearl Harbor-proved Japan was vulnerable and boosted American morale. • New style of fighting-ships usually didn’t see each other-fought in the air.

  8. US Mobilization • 1940 US authorized the first peacetime draft-The Selective Training and Service Act. 16 million served-GI’s • Diversity: 300,000 Mexican Am., 25,000 Native Am., 1 million Af. Am., 350,000 women served in non-combat roles. • The government took greater control of the economy to meet shortages.

  9. Turning Points of the War • Battle of El Alamein-Allies control the Suez. • Battle of Midway Island-June of 1942 stopped the Japanese advances west. This started Island Hopping. • Battle of Stalingrad-fight for control of the namesake city. Tensions with Allies-where next? • D-Day largest amphibious attack in history; free France.

  10. Assignment • Major WWII Battles • Use Chapter 32 to complete a timeline of the following battles from WWII. Put them in chronological order and write a brief summary of the importance of the battle. It is due on Weds. • D-Day Invasion • Attack on Poland • Attack of Pearl Harbor • Battle of Stalingrad • Battle of the Bulge • Atomic Bombs Dropped • Battle of Okinawa and Iwo Jima • Battle of Britain • Battle of Midway Island • Battle of El Alamein

  11. Answer for Homework • From Chapter 18.1 answer the following: • How did the US Government prepare the economy for War? (production, workforce, finance) • Describe daily life on the US home front. (shortages, pop culture, support)
