If a civilization is to survive, it must address and manage these challenges. As the once great Roman Empire encountered challenges from within and out, why did it fail to survive? What “legacy” was left by this powerful civilization that controlled vast territories in Europe, North Africa, and Asia Minor? Finally, as the Roman Empire crumbled, what would fill the void its demise created? What new form of government and society would emerge? • Our Enduring Understandings for this unit are: • Civilizations rise and fall. • Significant civilizations leave a legacy, which may be positive or negative. • As your son or daughter learns about the fall of the Roman Empire, how are the challenges facing the United States today similar and different? What are some of the contributions and actions of our country that will be considered “our legacy”? • Look for more Hot Lines about our study of the Medieval World and Beyond this year.
