Location and Time • 323-31 BC, from the time Alexander the Great died to when Cleopatra died. • All of the area conquered by Alexander the Great, who worked to spread Hellenistic culture throughout the world. • The Hellenistic Empire spread from Greece to Italy and all the way west as far as East India
Government • After death of Alexander the Great: split into separate city-states ruled by military leaders • Split into city-states: each had a separate ruler appointed by king.
Military City Defenses • Paved Streets for transportation of troops, fortified walls, and military bases Recruitment • Original military leaders became rulers of city-states • Peasants and prisoners of war were drafted into the army
Trade • Traded with Northern Africa and India • Used a uniform currency created by Alexander the Great. • Trade increased the spread of Hellenistic culture around the world.
Cities • City-States: not independent. They were ruled by a governor who was appointed by the king. • Had many luxuries: paved streets, good water supplies, markets, theatres, and libraries. • Architecture was a combination of Greek and other Eastern civilizations.
Slavery • Slavery declined over this period. • Slavery, if any, were usually prisoners of war.
Peasant Communities • Lower class increased while middle class decreased • War between different rulers of city-states put most people in poverty.
Collapse • The rise of Rome, took over most of the Hellenistic Empire. • City-States separated.
