IPv6: Just around the corner! • Johan van der Welle • Regional Director Benelux, Nordics, Baltics & South Africa • BlueCatNetworks
IPv4 Background • Protocol is ancient (early 1970s) • Designed to the support killer apps of the time • FTP (1971) • TELNET (1972) • SMTP (1981) • HTTP (1991) • Originally split into address classes • IPv4 address space is limited - about 4B total addresses • NATs extended life by reducing consumption via private networks

IPv4 - The Day After • The Internet will still work • IPv4 services will still run • IPv6 services will start to appear • Some systems will be dual stacked • Not enough space to fully dual stack organizations • IPv4 to IPv6 do not talk to each other

What Should You Do? • Conduct an inventory of IPv4 addresses and utilization • Assess your current IPv6 readiness • Develop an IPv6 road map focused on communicating with external IPv6 endpoints • Successful IPv6 Implementations will require DDI Internet Protocol Version 6: It’s Time for (Limited) Action – Dec, 2010

IP Address Management is Key! • IPv6 Addresses are not human friendly • No more hard-coded IPs - DNS is a must • Management of addresses in layers • Allocation patterns are sparse and require tracking • Determining the next available network is a non-trivial task • Transition will start on the outside • DHCP6 will be the preferred method for allocation • IPAM key transition technology
Business Concerns • The world is becoming IP-dependent • Web presence drives revenue & reputation • IPv4 addresses are now a financial asset • Employees can’t function without email or phones (VoIP) • Online security concerns are rising Microsoft pays Nortel $7.5M for 667 thousand IPv4 addresses – that’s $11.25 per IP address. Network World, Mar 2011 “IPv4 … will become a financial asset, [you] will be obliged to account for these assets and their utilization.” Gartner, Dec 2010 “Half of U.S. government Web sites are vulnerable to…DNS attacks because they haven't deployed [DNSSEC] mandated in 2008.” Network World, Jan 2011
Technical Concerns • DNS and DHCP outages: • Highly visible & impact business • Stop network communication • Major IT projects rely heavily on solid and scalable DNS and DHCP • Data center virtualization • VoIP & WiFi rollouts • No tool to centrally track valuable IPv4 space and optimize its usage • Increasing demands and flat budgets have pushed network teams to the breaking point No IP.... No Network... No Business!
Why Focus on External Connectivity? • IPv6 ✔ IPv4/IPv6 ✖ ✔ IPv4 IPv4 Only
Why do I need to Change? • Connectivity with the rest of the world • IPv6 is being adopted around the world as the new standard • Valuable metrics get lost translating 6 to 4 traffic • New killer apps demand IPv6 • Future network development will be focused on IPv6 • IPv4 will become legacy after IPv6 makes inroads • Cloud services and mobile networks will start leveraging the adoption
How Do I Move to IPv6? • The move to IPv6 is like planning a trip • Where am I starting from? • Where do I want to go? • How do I want to travel? • What route should I take? • Taking the trip • Maybe it’s a little more complicated….
Where Should You Be Today? Recommended by Gartner Recommended by Gartner
Gartner on BlueCat in 2011 “BlueCat moved from the Positive category in the 2009 DDI Marketscope to Strong Positive in 2011, due to its success in winning several large deals (including some large U.S. government agencies), its strengthened distribution channel and its appearance on more shortlists of Gartner clients.”
